Just as the summer brings abundance
of local produce
to the Community Servings kitchen,
the fall brings an abundance of important individuals who help make our fall events a continued success and ensure that our kitchen runs smoothly. Our dedicated volunteer groups help fulfill our mission to deliver 25 different medically tailored meals to over 1,450 critically ill neighbors in Massachusetts.
During this time, Community Servings welcomes many types of volunteer groups to help prepare and package meals in our kitchen and to assist with our fall events such as Pie in the Sky, Holiday Baskets,
Thanksgiving, and Holiday Meal Delivery.
Some of the groups we rely on are:
- As part of a service group or freshman orientation, groups of college students volunteering in our kitchen have the opportunity to get to know each other in an atmosphere drastically different from their college dorm or classroom. They will also leave with the satisfaction that they've made a difference in the lives of the critically ill and ultimately learn that it takes "all hands on deck" to get 850 meals prepared and delivered each day.
- Many corporate groups volunteer as part of their company-wide service day. Our friends from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, for example, participate in a Community Servings Peel-a-thon for their annual Day of Service, during which employees peel and cut vegetables to make 5,000 servings of soup.
- Each year over 250 Pie Seller teams help sell over 18,000 pies for our Thanksgiving bake sale, Pie in the Sky, raising funds to support our work.
Our volunteer groups are the backbone of Community Servings, and help complete a large portion of the work needed to sustain our meals program. Regardless of the task, these groups are committed to the cause and provide vital enthusiasm and energy needed to make our important work succeed. Each year we continue to be amazed by their ability to work towards a common goal and their willingness to get the job done! When we all come together, we can accomplish amazing things.
