Market News

Most of the better-publicized economic data comes out in the next 10 days for the January & February periods. On the local level, the improving economic prospects are driving commercial real estate development. There remains little or no spec construction for industrial and few spec projects for office but the activity keeps growing. This is particularly true in the Airport Corridor where new projects seem to lease up before construction ends.

Projects are under construction at sites in the RIDC Park West, Pittsburgh International Business Park, Clinton Commerce Park, Westpointe and the two Westport properties. Developers report that activity is higher than any time in recent memory. A great example of this is the Imperial Business Park. Ashford Partners started work on a 75,000 sq. ft. warehouse in July 2014 and quietly filled the building before completion.

The driver seems to be as much expansion of existing businesses - especially in the energy service sector - as it is new business attraction. Interest from new businesses has not waned, if the number of "wins" registered by the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance is an indication.

Project News

Final agreements are apparently unsigned but General Electric has selected Suncap Development to develop GE's new advanced plastics plant at the Chapman Westport site.

Bid results for the WVU Law Center renovation show a tight market, in spite of the better economic news. Mascaro was the low bidder:

1) Mascaro, $10,785,732

2) Massaro, $10,890,000

3) Rycon, $10,931,000

St. Clair Hospital is doing value engineering with the 2 low bidders - MBM & Landau - on its $9 million central plant.

PJ Dick was selected as CM for Chartiers Valley's $60 million middle/high school project, which won't bid until spring 2016. Washington & Jefferson also selected PJ Dick for its new tennis court project, the first phase of its $15 million recreation building expansion. The main piece of the project is out to bid now to PJ, Mascaro & Mosites. Details are available from the Builders Exchange. Jendoco was awarded the Falk Auditorium renovation at Winchester Thurston Academy in Shadyside.
