CMD-IT
Student Professional Development Workshop

Planning is underway for the 2015 CMD-IT Student Professional Development Workshop.  The workshop provides students with the unique opportunity to receive coaching and professional development from industry representatives and prepares them for the rigor of industry recruitment.  We focus on undergraduate and masters level students in computing from our target groups, ethnic minority and students with disabilities.

Participants selected for the workshop attend engaging

sessions on resume writing, interview skills, networking and professionalism.  The sessions are led by representatives in Industry.  Industry companies that have participated in past SPD Workshops included Cisco, Google, Microsoft, NSA, NetApp, Pariveda Solutions, Rockwell Collins, Schlumberger, USAA and VMWare.

Workshop attendees also go through two mock behavioral and technical interview sessions with industry representatives.  Students receive immediate feedback during the first mock interview, which allows them to apply the feedback during their second mock session.   The combination of two sessions aids in preparing students for the recruitment season.   Students must have a 3.0 or higher GPA to be considered for participation in the workshop. Applications will open in Spring 2015. Contact us if your company would like participate in the workshop.

Education Pathways

Expanding Computing Education Pathways (ECEP) is an NSF-funded Broadening Participation in Computing Alliance that seeks to increase the number and diversity of students in the K-16 educational pipeline to computing and computing-intensive degrees.  This goal is accomplished by supporting state-level reforms for computing education.  ECEP represents a collaboration of two very successful alliance funded from 2007 through 2013:  GeorgiaComputes! and CAITE (Commonwealth Alliance for Information Technology Education).

ECEP has formed a multi-state community of computer science education reform leaders who share information, challenges, and promising strategies for promoting change and measuring impact.  The network relies on regular meetings, a shared online resource, and experts and colleagues across the nation.  Currently, ECEP is focused on the following states and regions:  Massachusetts, Georgia, California, and South Carolina. Work with additional states will begin in earnest this fall, including plans to work with Indiana, Alabama, and the Caribbean.  By adapting and testing interventions across states, ECEP is identifying what works well and why; ECEP is building a framework for a state-level model of computer science education reform.

The ECEP leadership team consists of Mark Guzdial (Georgia Institute of Technology), Barbara Ericson (Georgia Institute of Technology), W. Richards Adrion (University of Massachusetts Amherst), and Renee Fall (University of Massachusetts Amherst).

Celebrating Diversity

Each June, here in the United States National Caribbean-American Heritage Month is celebrated. Many cities across the country honor this festive heritage month with parades and gatherings that celebrate the culture and the influence that Caribbean Americans have had here in the US. The official campaign to designate June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month, was spearheaded by Dr. Claire Nelson, Founder and President of the Institute of Caribbean Studies.  The commemoration of this month, hopes to ensure that Americans are reminded that its greatness lies in its diversity and that since the 16th Century, the destinies of the peoples of the Caribbean and the American continent have been inextricably linked.

Even in today's fast paced world Caribbean Americans are taking great strides to keep their Island Heritage alive and well for future generations.  Caribbean Americans share their culture through carnivals, festivals, music, dance, film, literature and food that enrich the cultural landscape of the United States.

We hope that you take the time to participate in the National Caribbean-American Heritage events in your area. Learn more about Caribbean-American Hertiage Month
