New Year Resolution or Just an Opportunity to Make Adjustments?

So many people make new year resolutions such as going on a diet, exercising more, adopting a new practice, reading more books, or getting more sleep...the list is endless. For me, I see it as time to adjust things that didn't work in the past 12 months, using the next chunk of time (12 months) to tweak and make major and/or minor adjustments to life and to work.

I also make resolutions throughout the year when it seems right or necessary. There is no rule stating that a resolution has to be at the beginning of a new year, a new month or a new week; a resolution can be made daily - think of a resolution simply as... read more

Taking Time to Breathe: Why the Breath Leads to Better Health All Around
Having been exposed to poor breathing issues both personally and secondary to family members since childhood, I've come to appreciate the art of breathing more than ever. As a young child I was hospitalized for 21 days with pneumonia and my lungs haven't been the same since. My younger brother has suffered from severe asthma since infancy and as an adult I was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma. Illness can affect the nature of your lungs greatly.

Smoking. Those who smoke never want to hear the words, "you should quit" and most often they already know they should but as I've been told many times over, quitting isn't easy. I've never smoked so I cannot and will not judge; I will only urge and offer my best support.

Most recently I've experienced close up the effects that a long term smoker is suffering; this makes me want to be able to wave a wand over those I know and love who smoke causing them to quit cold-turkey without cravings or urges to ever smoke again. In order to help you imagine what I saw/see and experienced this person dealing with, name & character withheld for privacy reasons, I'll mention that this person has been in and out of the hospital often for the past year and a half, they suffer from severe COPD and without going into details, they are suffering greatly. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a combination of chronic bronchial infections and emphysema. COPD affects your breathing through the breakdown of lung tissue and as it advances it causes breakdown of the capillaries in the lungs. Oxygen going to the heart decreases causing the body to make more red blood cells that the heart has to pump at a higher rate which often leads to heart conditions and failure.

If your resolution for the year or the month or even for the day is to quit smoking, take it seriously. Do anything you can that will help you quit and learn and practice ways to increase and deepen your every breath. Even if you don't smoke begin a practice as well. Meditation and yoga practices are great ways to learn to breathe.

When you learn to breathe fully and practice doing it on a daily basis you can experience, less fatigue, less fogginess, you'll feel less tired and less depressed. Proper breathing helps you center yourself, detoxify your body, sleep better and become one with your thoughts. Breathing affects every aspect of your life because life is breath; it sounds crazy maybe but we need to remember to just breathe.

Roasted Parsnip Chips

1-5 parsnips
Olive or coconut oil
Himalayan pink salt

Wash, peel and slice parsnips thinly and lay on a cookie sheet in a single layer. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt.
Bake in 425oven 30-40 minutes until golden (not burned) and slightly crisp.

You can also chop parsnips and add them to soups, stews or mashed and eaten as a side dish. Add roasted parsnip to salad or eat as a healthy snack.

Parsnip are healthy. They contain phyto-nutrients, anti-oxidants, vitamins & minerals including vitamin C and they help reduce cholesterol, obesity, and constipation, Parsnips offer protection from colon cancer, & acute lymphoblast leukemia. They also help the body maintain healthy connective tissue, teeth and gums. Parsnip helps balance heart-rate and blood pressure by countering the effects of sodium.

Ditch the Diet

A large majority of us want to lose an inch or two or....
We want to eat less sugar, we want to exercise more and we start out full steam ahead only to lose that steam a short time after. We lose it because ewe get busy or we get discouraged or hate the diet we try; there are many reasons, not excuses, why we don't stay on that diet. My thoughts? Ditch the diet.
When you learn how to just eat healthy and allow yourself your guilty pleasures in little bits and pieces, you find yourself getting into shape without feeling deprived of your favorite foods, activities and pastimes.

Begin ditching your diet by drinking more water, less soda and eating more vegetable based dishes and lean meat such as chicken and fish. If you're not a meat eater make sure you get plenty of protein through beans, nuts and true whole grains.

Reading books, following a blog & newsletters and more helpful yet, working with a health coach will help you reach your desired goals. Each of us is different and what works for your friends might not work for you but don't worry it's not you, you're unique and as special as the next person - take that and learn what is right for your body, your lifestyle and your wholeness.

Have a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous NEW year!
