CEZ Launches Organization from Programming!

After several successful years as a program of SAPCC, the Creative Enterprise Zone has created enough momentum to spin off as its own organization. The brainchild of former Executive Director, Amy Sparks and others, CEZ grew out of a concern that creative enterprises ranging from artists to light industries were being displaced. To address these concerns, SAPCC brought together a diverse group of community members to develop a plan to find a way to maintain the creative character of the neighborhood.

After a six month planning process, the CEZ Action Committee began the work of showcasing the creativity happening here, branding the area, connecting people in ways that support their economic vitality, and advocating for spaces and places that will lead to more people making a living based on their creative capacity.

Now the action team leading CEZ has readied the program to take its next big step. The overwhelming successes of the events CEZ has hosted, the strong base of supporters it has cultivated, and the backing of SAPCC make the leadership team confident in making the move to create a bigger and better version of the Creative Enterprise Zone.

This new iteration of CEZ as a separate organization will support their autonomy and self-sufficiency as an Action Team. They will have a greater capacity to focus on their fundraising activities and staffing needs to foster entrepreneurship alongside businesses and community development in South St. Anthony and beyond. We are excited to continue working with CEZ on increasing the visibility of our community, giving greater exposure to our creative enterprises, as well as highlighting the work of artists and artisans who occupy the lofts and offices in our busy industrial area.

CEZ embodies the amazing things that can happen when citizen groups feel empowered to take on the issues that matter most to them; aligning the entire community to projects an programs that will maintain the unique character of SAP. While we are sad to see such a strong program leave the Community Council, we are proud to have been there at its inception and look forward to partnering with CEZ on important projects in our shared community. We also look forward to seeing what CEZ does in the coming months and years!

Please join us in wishing CEZ and their leadership team the best of luck on their new venture!

A special thank you to Kyle for his hard work here at SAPCC. Kyle did an amazing job with our communications--we'll miss him, but we know CEZ will put his talents to work well!

Find out more information about CEZ on their website, or send Kyle and Amy (staff members at CEZ) a note to wish them good luck!

Serve on the Capital Improvement Budget (CIB) Task Force

piggy_bank_money.jpg

We need you to represent St. Anthony Park in the CIB process! We need your voice at the City to advocate for SAP's projects and help determine where else St. Paul's money will go this budget cycle.

This year, SAPCC's board approved two projects for submission. The first submission, Territorial Road Equitable Use, if approved, will connect clusters of disconnected populations, boost participation with area retail and economic activity, and provide increased access for local residents and employees. The second proposal, the Hampden Park Transitway Gateway would transform the obsucre access point on the U of M Transitway into a safe and appealing four-season entry point to Hampden Park.

We need our neighbors to volunteer to serve on the CIB committee to champion these projects and serve our community! Read the full proposals and find out more information here. Email cailin@sapcc.org to volunteer!

Got Photos?

1989 Land Development

We went on an deep office expedition and found some historic gems! We got to thinking, maybe our neighbors have some historic gems as well. Do you have any photos of St. Anthony Park? Did you take photos at a community clean up? An event? Did you do something with your neighbors and document it? We want to see SAP through your eyes over the years!

Email us your photos or drop some by the office for us to make copies. Old or new, we want to share your pictures with the rest of our neighborhood. We'll showcase our favorites in next month's e-newsletter and on our website. Happy photo hunting!

Thanks for Your Continued Support!

We started this new year on a high note with an outpouring of community support. Thank you for your generous donations!

We more than doubled the number of individual donors compared to last year and received many donations from people who had never given to us before.

We can't wait to continue the good work in our community. Look for new projects this winter and spring as we undergo strategic planning, work on building our ten-year plan, engage people from all segments of our neighborhood, prepare the garden, and clean up Kasota ponds!

Thank you for your partnership. With your help, we will continue to make SAP the best neighborhood to live, work, and play.

Hampden Park Planning Process Underway

The Hampden Park Planning Committee met on December 18th to kick off planning for the park's improvements before the holiday season hit. They will take back up their work this evening (January 15th) at the Community Council's office to make more planning decisions. Representatives from all areas of our community will discuss the plans with City Landscape Architect Alice Messer. The group will make decisions about plant species, picnic areas, and landscaping together. Stay tuned for more updates about the park as we hear more from this committee! Construction crews will break ground this summer with a project completion deadline set for fall 2015.
