ABOUT CORNELIA READ

Although she was raised by divorced hippie-renegade parents on the outskirts of Big Sur (with occasional stints in Honolulu), Cornelia Read knows old-school WASP culture firsthand, having been born into the tenth (and last) generation of her mother's family to live on Oyster Bay's Centre Island. Her childhood mentors included Sufis, surfers, single moms, Black Panthers, Ansel Adams, draft dodgers, striking farmworkers, and Henry Miller's toughest ping pong rival.

At fifteen, Read returned east, attending boarding school and college on full scholarship. While in New York, she did time as a debutante at the Junior Assemblies, worming her way back into the Social Register following her expulsion when a regrettable tantrum on the part of her mother's boyfriend's wife landed the lot of them on "Page Six" of the New York Post.

Much of the material in her Madeline Dare novels is autobiographical. Cornelia indeed lived in Syracuse, worked at a thankfully-defunct "therapeutic" boarding school in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, and has a cousin named Cate Ludlam who's intimately involved with the renovation of Prospect Cemetery, the oldest burial ground in Queens, New York.

Today, her Bostonian Great-Grandmother Fabyan's Society of Mayflower Descendants membership parchment (once proudly displayed at the back of Read's tiny linen closet in Berkeley, California) is boxed up in a mini-storage unit on the West Coast, awaiting a cross-country U-Haul rental so Cornelia can road-trip it to her new digs in New Hampshire.

Cornelia has twin daughters, the younger of whom has severe autism.

ABOUT MARY FOSTER CONKLIN

Her voice is smoky with a tart twist of lemon. Her style has been described as recognizably traditional yet unmistakably contemporary, as she puts her personal stamp on a repertoire that spans over nine decades. She has appeared in theaters, jazz clubs and cabarets in the metropolitan New York area and throughout the United States and Canada. In New York, Conklin's talents have earned her a place on the stages of The Blue Note, The Iridium Jazz Club, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, The Metropolitan Room and the Triad Theatre. She can also be seen from time to time singing off various fire escapes as The Lady in the Red Dress with the notorious Renegade Cabaret.

ABOUT RICHARD STEIN

An eighteen-year-old Richard Stein arrived in New York on the crest of a British wave that took New York by storm: the 1965 opening of the first Sassoon salon. Richard eagerly absorbed the energy and style of Manhattan, soon moving on to join fellow Sassoon-ite Paul Mitchell on The Beauty Floor at Henri Bendel, New York's trendiest boutique. Here he became a favorite stylist for such legendary fashion photographers as Richard Avedon, Hiro and Francesco Scavullo. This on-camera experience led Richard to create his most memorable style, a multi-layered, wash-and-wear haircut dubbed "The Shag." The new cut was adopted by women everywhere, becoming the quintessential haircut of the 1970s. and  continually adapted to the present time.

From there, it was a short skip to his own Madison and Lexington Avenue salons with an eclectic clientele of New York's most high-profile people. Today Richard Stein continues to evolve his hair-cutting skills, and some of his hair innovations, The Shag Ribbon-Cutting and Scissor-Pointing. are destined, once again, to transform the fashion of hair. Some innovative videoed haircuts are available on YouTube. But while his work is what consumes most of his time, Richard continues to pursue a variety of other interests, including careers as author and actor/musician. His first book, Set Free,  became an immediate beauty bestseller. He has also completed a second book, Split Ends. Both are available for a free download online.

His recent one man show, CUT+PASTE-A MUSICAL MEMOIR at LaMama's downtown experimental theater, with original incidental music written by Richard, was a sellout success. The show emphasized a life that he has tap-danced with the world of style since his early teens.

ABOUT HELENE GRESSER

Helene is a comedian, actress, and writer. Sometimes she writes funny songs. She may also serve you a drink tonight, and possibly some food. She co-created the webisode series "Hey Rude" and has been featured on the Tyra Banks show discussing rude behavior, even though she was so heavily made-up she could barely open her falsie-laden eyelids. Currently she is working on her one-woman, autobiographical comedy show, tentatively titled "SHEEZUS! (Comin' To Get Ya!)" in which she reads from her very DRAMATIC childhood journals and occasionally breaks out into songs from Jesus Christ Superstar. Helene is also opening her delightfully cozy thrift store, Artistic Thrift, in her Ridgewood, Queens neighborhood, and hopes you come by to listen to ole-timey

vinyl records and peruse her vast collection of tchotchkes, thingamajigs, and doo-dads. Originally from Shorewood, Wisconsin, she credits below-zero temperatures and

consumption of vast quantities of sausage, cheese, and beer for her family's bizarre sense of humor. Her brother John is far funnier, but he lives in Milwaukee, so he cannot steal her limelight now, thank Sheezus.
