MMHS News
Mandarin Museum & Historical Society
October 2014
Dear Friends of MMHS,

We have just entered  the Fall season and we are looking forward to finishing up this 2014 year with a bang. Thinking about winding up the year reminds us to thank you for your consistent support. The Board of Directors provides a strong foundation and is responsible for the overall direction and operation of the organization, but it would simply be impossible to offer our many educational activities and programs without the backing of all of our members, volunteers and friends. You all have come to us in many ways and have been with us over a broad range of time periods, but you have come and you have stayed and the Board is forever grateful to each and every one of you for your involvement and your efforts to save and preserve Mandarin's heritage...TOGETHER! Thank you very much.

CELEBRATE!

Mandarin Museum
10 Years in
Walter Jones Historical Park
2004-2014

September 27

The Jones family knew that the property of their family homestead was special and they knew that their family story was a very important one to the history of Mandarin. So they offered the City of Jacksonville the opportunity to buy the ten acres with the old buildings in what is now known as Walter Jones Historical Park. Thanks to the Florida Communities Trust, this was possible. The City then asked Mandarin Museum & Historical Society to partner with it and  "breathe life into the park." That was in 1993.

In 2003, the City offered to build a museum building to house the extensive and growing MMHS collection. Thank goodness there were people like Mary Ann Southwell, Dick Kravitz, Shorty Robbins, Jim Towart, Carl Davis, Susan Ford, Beth Meyer, Karen Roumillat,
and many others who were willing to advocate for and make this dream a reality. In 2004, the doors opened and thousands upon thousands of people have since crossed the threshold to learn about Mandarin and the people and events that have made it unique, special and significant in North Florida's history.

Please join us at noon on Saturday, September 27, to have a piece of anniversary cake, to share stories and to laugh together as we  celebrate this gift of Mandarin Museum in our community.

And while you're there, be sure to meet and talk with Dr. Keith Holland and his divers about one of our true "diamonds", the Maple Leaf. They are the experts on the ship, the dives and the artifacts...we are so fortunate to have them in-house for these special events.

All historic buildings will be open from 9-4 and volunteer Pat Plumlee has lined up some great acoustic music:

11-11:45    Greg and Pat Cloud
12-12:45    Clayton Adams
1-1:45       Ray Doucette
2-2:45       Patrick Plumlee

SEE YOU THERE!

MANDARIN CEMETERY WALKING TOUR AVAILABLE

Have you ever wondered about some of the old stones in Mandarin Cemetery - wanting to know something about the people who were here before us and now buried in our beautiful cemetery?

Starting October 1, you can pick up an informative brochure at the cemetery gate and learn about ten individuals including Walter Jones, Charlie Brown, Theodore Flynn and Major William Wirt Webb (who lived on the Walter Jones Historical Park property prior to the Walter Jones family.)

This walking tour is marked by numbers that coordinate with the map and descriptions so you can easily walk around on your own and get a Mandarin history lesson.

Many thanks to Bill Morrow for his writing and editing, to Don Stanley for his biographical research, to Susan Ford for her persistent goal to develop such an educational piece and to Tracey Arpen for editing.

The cemetery is located on Mandarin Rd. just 1/4 mile west of Mandarin Museum.
