Dear Friend,
Teens are cool. It's true. Genuine, thoughtful and forward thinking when it comes to our world. Sunday, during the high school Youth Forum, I inquired as to how the group thought things were going. The basic response was, "Good, but it would be great if we could do more." "More what?" I wondered. More service, more 'doing' outside the church was the response.
That really made my heart smile. Because students are so busy we forget how much warmth and compassion really resides inside. So, in response to that, we put together a rough plan to get together this past Monday (a school holiday) to pack bag lunches and take to the streets to hand them out.
It was nice outside; very breezy. We walked many blocks around downtown before we had given out the 25 lunches we had made. I watched as their comfort in approaching strangers with the offer of food grew. Person by person, lunch by lunch, it became easier to reach out to a stranger in kindness. No assumptions, no judgment, just kindness and a desire to share. There were some who politely declined the lunch but were thankful for the offer. I think in some way those folks were fed as well...in the knowledge that someone out there cares. In this case, it was our teens. Teens are cool. It's true.
