"Who do you say I am?"
 Matthew 22:34-46

This lesson starts with a straight forward question offered by the Pharisees, since Jesus had silenced the Sadducees with his wisdom.    They asked him the greatest commandment, addressing Jesus with the title "Teacher."  They would not acknowledge his true role, Messiah.  He answered, "Love the Lord....and love your neighbor."

Then Jesus takes the initiative.  He asks the Pharisees, "What is your opinion about the Messiah.  Whose son is he?" They answered "The son of David." Jesus mystified them by asking, "How then does David call him Lord if he is David's son?"  Jesus' internal wisdom from the Father squelched both the Sadducees and the Pharisees, all educated and learned men.  How could the son of a carpenter outsmart the religion's most learned scholars.  Did you ever wonder how these men differed from the men in the temple where the 12 year old Jesus went to listen and learn?

This interchange must have infuriated the religious elite.  Who do you say Jesus is?
