Amazing Tails:
Making Connections with PAWS
|
| Arlo, PAWS Therapy Companion |
"I was so happy to have my short leash yesterday! A Mom with her two boys was outside of the outpatient lab for quite a while waiting. The younger son (about 6 years old with Down Syndrome) happily walked Arlo back and forth using the short leash while I trailed along with the longer leash. We must have done that for almost 15 minutes, and the little boy was beaming and informing all passers-by that HE was walking Arlo. Mom was very appreciative. Thanks for providing us with such a helpful option.
"Since the lab was very busy, we spent a lot of time there yesterday. When I'm visiting with those who are waiting, I'm used to the phlebotomists walking out of the lab doors and calling patients' names. I had to smile yesterday when one of them appeared and called out, 'Arlo! We need you in here, puppy!' I really love the work we do."

Note from the Executive Director
|
2015 is already off to a terrific start for PAWS - many prospective teams are coming through January's training; PAWS University is launching with set schedules for all our specialized training classes; and we have a staff that really cares about our teams, our sites, and each other. This year will just keep getting better and better. If you have ideas on how to help us do that or want to express a concern or run an idea past us, please contact me. We welcome your input - always! Happy New Year, Lynne Robinson

Tidbit Corner: Do Dogs Need Boots?
|
"In the world of dog fashion, there's a surprisingly large variety of choices in boots, from basic models that look like socks to fleece-lined with zippers and Velcro. With the thick soles nature put on your dog's feet, you may wonder if boots are a necessity..."

A PAWS member recently shared with the PAWS office that his wife puts boots on her PAWS Therapy Companion when they visit to ensure that a "high five" or "paw/hand shake" will be softly received (and reduce the chance of scratching delicate skin). Would this trick work for you and your therapy companion? Try it out!

PAWS Shining Stars:
Thayer Cooper & Chloe
|
| Thayer Cooper & Chloe, PAWS Therapy Team |
Thayer Cooper and Chloe, a PAWS Therapy Team in Southern Delaware, were recently featured in an article in Delmarva Now.
"For second-grader Alana Furst, reading hasn't always been easy.
"'Before this, she was struggling with her confidence as a reader,' said her father, Andy.
"Just after 4:30 p.m. on a recent Thursday, Chloe walked in wearing her reindeer outfit. Jingle-jingle-jingling, Chloe greets Alana with an, "a-ROO, a-ROO," helping dismiss her timid feelings.
"For the past few months, Chloe, the half-Dachshund, half-Lab, has been read to by struggling readers at the Selbyville and Frankford libraries. As a part of the PAWS for Reading program, Chloe and her owner, Thayer Cooper, visit regularly to give children a chance at reading to an unconditionally loving companion..."

Community Spotlight: Latin American Community Center
|
Molly Bear (Huebner) and Sundance (Robinson) are encouraging English Language Learners to speak English. Learning most anything is more fun when there is a dog present and Amy Ackerman, teacher at the LACC, invited us to work with some of her students to help them with casual conversational skills.
We talk about pets and caring for them, play games that include the pups to make them more fun, and talk about the lesson for that day - but we do it with the pup as the center of the conversation. We're seeing a lot of smiles and folks eager to be part of the conversation. Amy says that she can see some of the shyer folks talking more and everyone's comfort level rising.
Donde esta el perro? At the LACC every week!
