It's been a very busy start to Fire Season for Red Paw! Since January 1st we've been called 67 times for assistance, to help 73 families & 146 displaced pets! Sadly, we've also seen a rise in injuries and deaths of pets due to fires, including 3 puppies this week already!

These are tragic reminders of how important it is to not only have a fire escape plan, but to practice it with ALL family members! Please take a moment to read our Top Ten Fire Safety tips below, and share with family and friends!

Top Ten Fire Safety Tips
  • Have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home.
  • Test smoke alarms regularly.
  • Talk about, and practice your family's fire escape plan monthly (and include pets!).
  • Do not heat your home with your oven, candles, or kerosene heaters!
  • If you must use space heaters, make sure they are at least 3ft away (in every direction) of anything flammable, and use the kind that automatically shuts off if tipped over!
  • Be sure to unplug all non-essential items when you leave the house or go to sleep, including phone chargers, lamps, computers, etc.
  • Wear layers inside your home, and use extra blankets at night to keep warm.
  • Keep the water in your sink or tub dripping to avoid pipes from freezing, and never use a blowtorch or candle to try to thaw them!
  • If you have a fireplace, be sure it's checked regularly. Ensure embers are completely out and disposed of properly outside, away from anything flammable, before leaving the house or going to sleep.
  • Share these tips with your neighbors because fire spreads quickly!
