Yes Virginia,
St. Joseph offers some of the best live music in Northwest Missouri

The St. Joseph music scene played the little brother role to Kansas City's big brother for years. As time passes, there is no big or little anymore; they have just become brothers.

St. Joseph, just under an hour away from downtown Kansas City, has become a hotbed for quality bands. At this spring's South By Southwest (SXSW) music festival, St. Joseph sent SIX different acts to the Austin, Texas festival, which is a staggering amount for a town of its size. Last year's emergence of the band Radkey, who have now become an international touring act, helped lead the way for other bands like Eyelit, Dsoedean and Scruffy & The Janitors to get clout in Kansas City and be played on 96.5 The Buzz. These bands, along with Maria The Mexican, who has ties in St. Joseph and Kansas City, all sent members to the super bowl of music festivals (SXSW) last year.

Scruffy & The Janitors wear their influence of The Strokes and The White Stripes on their sleeves and Dsoedean stomps out catchy pop-rock tunes as easy as a conversation. Eyelit's music plays as fragile as porcelain and Maria The Mexican brings south of the border flavor to the table. Those bands aren't the whole story in St. Joseph either. Bands of all genres are popping up, several of them surprisingly seasoned and original.

Missouri Homegrown blasts 70s-style glam rock with a hardcore lifestyle to match while Jerkface bounces with surfer-ska and pychobilly tendencies. The band Cupcake plays as unconventional of music as you will hear and The Souveneers

stick with traditional music. If you like metal, Kilmaat is harcore underground and Knot Afrayed is mainstream hard rock. From the new blues of the GasTown Lamps to the new country of Money For Nothin', it is hard to argue that several genres of music are flourishing just north of Kansas City.

The stagnant time for the St. Joseph music scene has undoubtedly passed with DIY record labels popping up and bands concentrating on putting out quality music. The scene has been built up over the past few years with musicians supporting each other and pushing one another to be better. The measuring sticks used for each other are all around in St. Joseph and it appears that they are measuring up to Kansas City and beyond.
