The award will be presented at MNN's annual conference on October 29. Click here to attend the conference and award presentation.

A respected leader in the nonprofit sector and in philanthropy, Beth is known for her commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as her innovative approaches and willingness to take risks; her peers credit her with the growth and success of many local nonprofits and communities. It's also been noted that her intelligence and intuition is matched only by her compassion.

"Our relationship with Hyams and their staff has been about a true partnership based on trust and mutual respect for each other's commitment to social change and justice in the communities we represent. Beth is that special individual who you are not afraid to call ...She will listen to you ...and lead you through those hard times in the most simple and powerful way. In Chelsea Collaborative's toughest times she has led us to the top and I and the residents of Chelsea will forever be grateful to Hyams..." - Gladys Vega, Executive Director, Chelsea Collaborative.

Each year, as part of its annual conference, MNN honors a nonprofit leader for decades of innovation and spirit. Past Lifetime Achievement Award winners include Charles Rucks, Bill Walczak, Rev. Ray A. Hammond and Rev. Gloria White-Hammond, and Kip Tiernan.

New Report Highlights Benefits of Civic Engagement & Volunteering
Report links civic engagement and volunteerism to positive outcomes for at-risk and low income youth and the economic health of states
Yesterday, Opportunity Nation released its latest report "Connecting Youth and Strengthening Communities: The Data Behind Civic Engagement and Economic Opportunity," which includes data from all 50 states and Washington D.C. linking volunteerism to lower rates of disconnected youth and also lower rates of income inequality.

"This groundbreaking research showing the link between civic engagement and economic opportunity strongly affirms the power of Massachusetts Nonprofits," said Paul Kendrick, Director of Coalition and Grassroots Engagement, Opportunity Nation. "Youth who volunteer are less likely to be disconnected from work and school. Communities with more volunteerism tend to have lower income inequality and higher economic mobility. This is evidence that volunteering is more than a feel good activity, it impacts the individual and society."

Key findings from the report include:
  • The chance that a young adult is disconnected from work or school drops in half, from 11.1 percent to 5.7 percent, if he or she volunteers.
  • Civic engagement is a significant predictor of economic opportunity across states.
  • In places with higher rates of volunteerism, income inequality tends to be lower.
  • Youth who participate in service projects and join groups are significantly more likely to become adults who vote and engage in service to their community.
While those of us in the sector have long touted the numerous benefits of being civically engaged, research never hurts when proving the point. We urge you to share this report and its key takeaways.  Opportunity Nation will be hosting two webinars (October 7 & 14 from 1:30-2:30) to learn more about this data. You can register for the webinar and/ or download the report here.

NONPROFIT 411:
5 Policies That Could Protect Your Organization
By Sheryl Howard, Krokidas & Bluestein LLP

Tax exempt non-profit organizations should periodically review their existing policies, and should consider what other policies make sense based on their size, staffing, and operations. The following is a list of some key policies for Massachusetts non-profit organizations to consider:

1)  Conflict of Interest -   A conflict of interest policy should define what constitutes a conflict, identify who is covered (typically directors, officers and senior staff), and include a process for monitoring and enforcing the policy.  In particular, the policy must require that these parties disclose any conflict and recuse themselves from all voting and discussion of the matter.  Some organizations may want to have a conflict of interest policy for rank and file staff, as well. Learn about more policies to consider including whitleblower, data privacy, and more...
