Upcoming Lecture

Don't miss our next exciting lecture on November 20. In the summer of 2014 Jean-Pierre ("JP") Mouligne, his wife Kate, their two children and two French cousins sailed from Bristol to France aboard their 45 foot sloop Flamili. The family will discuss their preparation for the trip and describe their adventures at sea. You will meet the family during the reception preceding the lecture. The reception will begin at 6:00 and the lecture at 7:00.

Can You Identify this Hardware?
Can You Identify this Hardware?

Recently, the Museum was asked about the hardware shown in this photograph.

Can you help us identify this item? Click Here to see larger photos.

The part is bronze and the name Paxton & Co. is cast into the body. The outside diameter of the large ring is 5.5" and the inside diameter is 3.375".

The story goes (perhaps embellished over the years) that this part was conceived by Teo Petterson, a sailmaker working with Starling Burgess and Harold Vanderbilt in 1934; and that this hardware was used aboard the Cup defender. Supposedly only four of these were made and used before the part was banned.

If you know what this part is, please email your suggestion(s) to: [email protected].

RELIANCE Project

Latest News:
Within the last few weeks, we discovered that our Barbie doll ( "Bristol Barbie") on the RELIANCE model does in fact belong. Hope Goddard Iselin was a female racing crew member who served as timekeeper. This realization brings in a whole new conversation on female pioneers in the America's Cup. Hopefully, she'll be donned in the blue and white sailor's outfit soon.
