2014 - Year in Review

Imagine yourself born into a family that lives in a massive city dump. Your home is a small shack made of corrugated metal. To survive, your parents dig through the trash for recyclables.

Even worse, what if you were orphaned in a country suffering from severe poverty and lack of a "safety net" for the most vulnerable.

Or think of the hopelessness of living in a ghetto with very few opportunities to provide for yourself and your family.

Try picturing yourself in a Guatemalan prison, uncertain about your future, lacking hope to stop the vicious cycle of crime that landed you in prison in the first place.

Sadly, these are the realities of life for many in Guatemala.  Today, thanks to the generosity of friends like you, there is hope.  With your help, this year Hope Renewed International has:
  • Hired 3 new teachers and a full-time director in our preschool in the Guatemala City Dump.  This team successfully graduated 8 students and are working to secure their placement in a nearby kindergarten class.
  • Supported nearly one hundred scholarship students in the ghetto and the dump, furthering their education, creating new opportunities for a better tomorrow.  Ten students graduated from the scholarship program this year, including 6 high school graduates and 4 vocational school graduates.
  • Worked through the next phase of construction of La Limonada Bakery, a project designed to create jobs, build a strong work ethic and develop skills in culinary arts.
  • Expanded our screen printing operation in the prison, increasing our capacity and paving the way for additional participants in our rehabilitation programs.
  • Hired a new staff member, Lauren Fischer, as Director of Mental Health and Wellness.  In every community, having a strong mental health program is key to Hope Renewed's wholistic approach to caring for the people we serve.
  • And finally, we took on our largest project to date! Hogar Esperanza Renovada, a home for 30 girls in Mazatenango, Guatemala.  Our efforts have been focused on
improving the day-to-day lives of the girls through hiring all new staff members, environmental improvements, strengthening education as well as revamping the girls' diet with an emphasis on nutrition and development.
As wonderful as it is to see what God has done this past year, it is equally as exciting to think about what is possible in the months ahead.  In 2015, Hope Renewed will:
  • Begin construction on a transition home for boys in Santiago de Atitlan.  This home will support young men preparing to age out of the orphan care system.  The goal of our wholistic approach will be to raise up men who will be future leaders, loving fathers and supportive husbands
  • Complete the bakery in La Limonada, supplying wholesale baked goods to the small stores in the ghetto.
  • Expand the number of students in the Guatemala City Dump Preschool, providing hope for a better future for even more kids in this community
  • Finish the playground for the preschool, building a place for the kids to have recess and time for the teachers to plan their days.
  • Increase our rehabilitation offerings in the prisons including a cut & sew operation and a bakery.
  • Continue to fund our scholarship program, ensuring the continued education and opportunities for people in the ghetto.
  • Further strengthen our care at the Mazatenango Girl's home.  We need to purchase a new vehicle to transport the girls to school and their various appointments. And provide additional staff to support the ongoing care of the girls.
This is just a glimpse into the vision we have for the coming year. So much is possible. However, in all things, we are dependent on God's people to partner with us in service.  Our plans will remain simply that - plans - without others coming along side.

Would you please consider an investment into the work of Hope Renewed?  Together we can truly bring hope to the lives of the people of Guatemala.
