Discovery Program News

Brilliant!

This past Saturday evening we celebrated the Live Earth Farm Discovery Program with an amazing farm-to-table dinner, and thanks to more than 150 friends, volunteers, sponsors, and donors we raised over $30,000 to support farm-based nutrition education in the Pajaro Valley and beyond!

In addition to the generous financial support we received, what made the evening truly brilliant was the generosity of spirit demonstrated by friends and families who gave of themselves to make this year's beautiful dinner on the farm a fun and delicious experience. From historians to farmers, bankers, and techies, from toddlers to teens, lifers to newbies, big businesses and small, all can be counted among those supporting our mission to improve personal, community and environmental health through growing and preparing farm fresh food. So many people are becoming invested members of our growing community, and we are very grateful.

As we fall towards the season of giving thanks, we are all thankful to be able to provide farming education that leads to employed teenagers with meaningful work, responsible consumers who understand the impact of their food choices, and a community who appreciates the hard work it takes to get healthy food to our plates.  And, we are profoundly appreciative to all who joined us and contributed to make Saturday such a special event.

If, by chance, you were unable to attend and would like to contribute, please click the "donate" button below. It only costs about $10 to get one more child to the farm.

Crop & Field Notes

Just when one gets too comfortable with the abundance of summer it's time to let go, change directions as daylight retreats in our northern hemisphere. The energy in plants is starting to move toward the roots. Leaves are falling as the life force goes within. Some of the trees are already turning color, and summer crops such as tomatoes, summer squash, and the berries are all starting to slow down. With the start of Fall we get to look forward to new crops, my favorites include Celeriac (celery root), Winter Squash, Romanesco Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Pineapple Guavas, and Parsnips. In the field a lot of preparations are already focused on next season. Now, before the rain starts (let's hope it will) we prepare field-beds for strawberry, raspberry and garlic plantings scheduled for November and early December. The Fuji Apples are developing their sugars, and some parts of the orchard are ready for picking. Keep an eye out for an early Fuji Apple U-Pick date we might announce in next week's newsletter, since everything is ripening earlier this year.
