Help From My Friends
The stories in this New Year edition are just a sampling of how friends help friends and join together to help others through the Y...and we are just getting started! I love how friends at the Y helped a member find her strength and success through their words of encouragement and swimming tips. I am so proud of the Y kids who joined together to support Y children around the world while learning more about the rich diversity and opportunities to come together in our own community.

The Y supports kids in their development and provides healthy choices for all ages. The power of the Y is that we accomplish this important work through building a community. We connect people to each other and join people together to accomplish what they might not have alone.

Each of you contributes to this powerful community of the Y in your own special way. As we launch this New Year, consider engaging with the person next to you in the wellness center, on the bleachers, or when you recognize each other outside the Y. When we pause to learn just a bit more about each other, we can discover how we can help each other achieve our hopes and aspirations together. The power is exponential - we receive joy and satisfaction knowing we made a difference and a friend.

See you at the Y -

INSPIRATION

Let your friends at the Y inspire you to make 2015 your best year ever!
Every year, millions of Americans resolve to get in better shape and become healthier. According to a recent YMCA nationwide survey of more than 1,000 adults, less than a quarter of those questioned kept their resolutions in 2014. Most said they tried but fell short, and 40 percent confessed that they made it through only a couple of weeks or months. One-third of survey respondents who plan to make a resolution in 2015 believe they'll stick to it and reach their goals, with more than half believing that encouragement from others will keep them committed.

Finding a supportive community, like the Y, can be beneficial in keeping resolutions on track, because our organization is so much more than a gym. We are a community of supportive neighbors that offer more health, more hope, and more opportunity for the New Year and for years to come.

58-year-old Cheryl Madden of Boone County agrees that encouragement from others is critical in helping individuals reach their health and wellness goals. "Two years ago, I began paddling around in the pool at the R.C. Durr YMCA in Burlington," she said. "I watched the lap swimmers gliding through the water and was discouraged to find I was only able to swim half a lap before tiring out. I was woefully out of shape. That's when my YMCA friends stepped in. The lifeguards and other swimmers were very friendly and helped me with tips and information to keep me motivated. Within a year, I had improved my stroke and endurance and could swim a mile several times a week!" In September 2014, this confident swimmer took part in the Great Ohio River Swim, from the Serpentine Wall across to the Newport Aquarium, then back again. It was challenging, but she did it. "I am stronger, more fit, and have found an exercise I can do for the rest of my life," she said. "But, more importantly, I have found a great group of people at the Y I am honored to call my friends."

To increase your odds of keeping your New Year's resolutions, start with attainable goals and take it one step at a time. Swim another lap, use the stairs, eat more vegetables, or try a new fitness activity. Invite a friend to join you or make some new ones at the Y. Let your friends at the Y inspire you to make 2015 your best year ever!

NEW AT THE Y
IN 2015

Bob Roncker's Sit to Fit 5K and 10K Training Programs

We've gotten a lot of requests from members about offering both beginning and advanced running programs. I am happy to let you know that in 2015, the Y is partnering with Bob Roncker's Running Spot to offer the popular Sit to Fit 5K and 10K training programs. The eight week program for runners and walkers will prepare you to take part in a 5K; the 12-week program will prepare you to participate in a 10K.

In addition to meeting lots of new friends to help you reach your goal, taking part in a running/walking program can help improve your health, lose weight, and relieve stress. The training programs at the Clermont, M.E. Lyons, Campbell County, Blue Ash, and R.C. Durr YMCA's are open to all in the community. A series of informational meetings will begin in January. TOGETHER, WE CAN DO SO MUCH MORE

Local Y Raises Funds and Awareness about YMCA World Service Campaign

The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati is proud to be part of Y-USA's Diversity, Inclusion, and Global Education (DIG) program, integrating diversity and inclusion practices into all aspects of operations and programming.

Recently, the Powel Crosley, Jr. YMCA DIG subcommittee held a spare change drive to raise money and awareness for the YMCA World Service Campaign, designed to raise awareness and support of the Y's worldwide work, operating in challenging social, economic, and political environments. In many communities, the Y is the only place where a child can access a library, or a parent can develop job skills for better family stability. Locally, YMCA members, staff, and children in before and after school programs raised over $600 in change to help YMCA's in other countries overcome challenging conditions.

Especially moving, was the work of the children in this campaign. In addition to asking their friends and families for support, many of the children emptied their piggy banks to raise money for children and families they have never met. Each day of the drive, leaders at the before and after school sites, read a story to children about a YMCA in another country. They helped the children find the country they had just talked about on the map and then had some great discussions on what it might be like to live there...including some who have been faced with earthquakes, flooding, and other natural disasters.

"Donating made me feel good about myself because when we don't help people, we are not living in Jesus' footsteps...I hope that our donation told them they are not alone," said 9-year-old McKenna Rocco. For more information or to donate to the YMCA World Service Campaign, click here.
