Keeping you up to date
on the latest news and
events in the Hillsboro

School District

STAFF EDITION
FEATURED STAFF
Our first staff edition features ALL of you!
It was wonderful to see everyone at our kickoff celebration on Tuesday, August 26! We all have been working hard to gear up for the start of a new school year, so it was nice to take a break, have a chance to greet old friends and meet new ones, and show our HSD pride. Mike Scott and our student presenters provided an inspiring event. In case you missed the celebration (or want to revisit it), we have a couple videos: "You are the Difference," featuring our students, and the full event video. We will have exciting times ahead, so be sure to keep up to date with Hot News. Don't forget to let us know what's happening with you, too!

HOT NEWS HAS A NEW LOOK

Those of you who have been with us for a while know that this is not the Hot News of the past! Instead of having a primary focus on individual school activities and events, Hot News will now be more article-driven, scannable and mobile-friendly. We will also feature both a parent/ community version and a staff version. Our hope is that the new format will be more informative and useful for a broader audience of patrons. Please let us know what you think!

OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR BENEFITS: AUG. 18 - SEPT. 7
Make your elections no later than September 7!

Enrollment for the 2014-2015 benefits year is now open. Prior year OEBB plan selections will "roll forward" to the new year. However, there are new plans, current plan changes, and new (higher) premiums. We encourage everyone to review their selections and out-of-pocket costs during Open Enrollment. Plan changes are not allowed throughout the year unless there is a qualifying event. Visit the HSD benefits page.

PROUD TO BE HSD CAMPAIGN
The Communications Department has launched a campaign around its new theme: Proud to be HSD! We consider everyone who lives in the greater Hillsboro area to be part of the Hillsboro School District, so we want to hear from all of you--staff members, students, parents, and community members--about what makes you proud of the Hillsboro School District. Tobias principal Steve Callaway shows us here that students are what makes him proud, but what about you? Take a moment to share your story with us by filling out the brief form on our website.
DISTRICT RECEIVES NEARLY $729,000 IN ADDITIONAL GAIN SHARE FUNDS
At its August 14 meeting, Hillsboro School District Board members indicated their intention to use additional Gain Share money to both restore the one remaining budget reduction day to the 2014-15 school calendar and address staffing issues that may arise this fall.

The District was expecting over $1.2 million in Gain Share funds from the City of Hillsboro and Washington County in 2014-15. That money, along with a portion of additional State School Fund dollars, was already used to restore four instructional days to the 2014-15 school year. Read more.

HSD WELCOMES OVER 400 NEW STAFF
Thanks to a combination of retirements, new positions and other vacancies, the District is thrilled to welcome more than 200 new teachers to its ranks in the 2014-15 school year. The new teachers had three additional contract days--August 20, 21 and 22--to get oriented to the District, receive specialized training, and have extra time in their buildings to prepare for the coming year. In addition, over 200 new classified staff are joining us this year.
HSD PARTICIPATES IN DAWSON CREEK WELLNESS FAIR
For the first time, HSD joins other Dawson Creek companies for wellness activities
It was a beautiful day to be outside on August 19 as HSD staff joined FEI, Triquint and Radisys employees to participate in a 5K race, boot camp, 5K fun run/walk, and yoga under the trees, all to promote healthy activities. Exhibitors provided goodies and information for more healthful living. See video.
SHAREPOINT TO BE RETIRED IN JUNE 2015
Intranet services being moved to Google Apps

Sharepoint is the web application that serves the district's intranet services in the way of MyHSD, TeamWorks and OnDemand sites. We will retire this application and services on June 30, 2015. The replacement application for our intranet needs in the district will be Google Apps for Education.

MyHSD, Document Center, and TSO (Technology Services) sites have already been converted to Google Apps. Trainings will be scheduled all year to help address how to migrate a site from Sharepoint to Google Apps for Education. You can sign-up for training in Serebra.
