To our fellow KidsAndCars.org families and friends,

This year for Thanksgiving, our family is giving an extra special thank you to KidsAndCars.org (KAC) for their tireless work and support for grieving families like ours. We wanted to 'give back' to them, so we proposed a match: for every dollar donated, we will match that donation up to $4,000.00.

Donate now & our family will double your donation in honor of our son, Alec:

Why we are encouraging you to donate and 'match' what you give?

In April 2004, our 16-month-old son, Alec, was backed over and killed because he was unable to be seen in the large blindzone behind his grandfather's SUV. In an instant, our beautiful, healthy son was gone. In the aftermath of that unbearable life changing tragedy, our family vowed to do whatever it takes to honor Alec and make sure no more families have to lose a child in this manner, that no person who causes this unthinkable, horrific tragedy would have to suffer and live the rest of their lives with the consequences of inadvertently taking a life as his loving grandfather did.

We became a part of the KidsAndCars.org family. Losing a child is one of the most powerless, impotent feelings you will ever experience as a parent.  You were supposed to be their protector, keep them safe always. It is impossible.  To work with KAC, to be proactive in enacting change to prevent further tragedies; it is empowering. We are doing something to honor his life. His siblings are involved; it helps them in their grieving process to do something positive in his memory. KAC gave us direction and a place to channel our energies and we are grateful to them for their unending dedication in their work with trying to keep children safe in and around cars.

Our family, along with several other families, worked side-by-side with KidsAndCars.org (KAC) for many years which led to the rear visibility standard being issued this year. Drivers will at long last be able to see what is behind them when they are backing up.

Despite this huge success in making vehicles safer for children, the important work of KidsAndCars.org is far from finished, and they need your support to carry on their life-saving work. Estimates are that all vehicles on the roads will not have rearview cameras until the year 2054. Their work in continuing to raise awareness about the blind zone behind vehicles cannot stop, as there are still tens of thousands of cars already on the road that do not have back up systems, back up camera in them.

We think about the split second it took for us to lose Alec, and then we think about just how many split seconds will change the lives of families between now and 2054. This is why we are asking you to donate today to help KAC continue working towards eliminating backover and many other tragedies.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for supporting the KAC team.

With much gratitude,

The Nelson Family
