SUCCESS IN SERVICE
April 2014

In January, our network mobilized thousands of Allies, alumni, and community volunteers from coast to coast to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy. In Washington D.C., Public Allies served at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center providing supplies for homeless veterans. We were joined by Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service (pictured far left); Treasury Secretary Jack Lew (2nd from left); and Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki and his wife, Penny (center).

Live From New York, it's a Public Allies AmeriCorps Alum!
Jan. 18 was a huge day for Public Allies AmeriCorps alumni everywhere, as one of their own debuted on NBC's Saturday Night Live. Sasheer Zamata, a graduate of Public Allies New York Class of 2010, was chosen to be a cast member on the long-running comedy show. Her selection was widely perceived as a diversification of the show's cast. Public Allies is proud that one of our own is taking the core values of diversity and inclusion to a larger audience through their work in entertainment.
Partners Praise the 'Public Allies Experience'
Numbers tell just a part of our story. Each year, about 90% of our nonprofit community partners supervisors who host an AmeriCorps Public Ally say their organizations are better positioned to carry out their missions as a result of our partnerships. And 92% said they'd hire a graduating AmeriCorps Ally if an opportunity arose. "Public Allies does an exceptional job finding and developing talented and mission-driven individuals" says Robert Bunce, who for 10 months supervised an AmeriCorps Ally from Public Allies Silicon Valley. "I think the Public Allies experience is invaluable to the participants, and the product equally exceptional for organizations." Alumni Innovator Campaign a Success
In February, we challenged our alum to create projects that tap into community assets often overlooked by others. Eleven alum stepped up with projects, which we promoted on social media, and through an Indiegogo fundraising page. The result was amazing. Our alum, many who had never raised money before, brought in a total of $14,000 from hundreds of donors. This incudes Esperanza Dodge (pictured), a Public Allies New Mexico alum whose project is an education program for young mothers who struggle with addiction. Public Allies' alumni network of 5,000 leaders (and growing) has never been more active. Not only is our alumni network key to finding fruitful job leads and collaboration opportunities, but it's proving key in funding alumni projects. Public Allies is also hosting a new series of live Google Hangouts that go a little more in depth with a growing list of accomplished alumni.
Public Allies Delaware Alum's Film Debuts on HBO
Kiandra Parks' debut short film, "Black Girl in Paris," was picked up for distribution by HBO, marking a huge career jump for the alum from Public Allies Delaware Class of 2008-2009. Not only that, but director Spike Lee is her new adviser at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Learn more about Parks' new chapter in her career by reading here.
