 A New Year

"If you don't know where you are going,
you'll end up someplace else." -

In order to know where you are going, you'll need to make a plan. The New Year brings with it the hope for fresh starts. Fresh starts imply different outcomes. Different outcomes require planning ahead. Maybe its just the right time for you to take stock of your professional and career standing and see if you need a time to plan new plan. Are you where you want to be? Is it time to upgrade your skills to gain upward mobility in your workplace? Is it time to change careers altogether?

As you inventory your professional needs, check out the The Jobs With The Brightest Future published online by Forbes.com. This list includes office clerks and combined food preparation and serving workers, including fast food among the top ten job trends for 2015 and beyond. VSU Continuing Education offers career and skill building courses that can get you current with skill sets or certifications as you put your personal career plan into action.

Because assertive communication skills are an important part of interacting in school, work, and life, the 2015 session will include Assertiveness Communication Training.

"Today, establishing a social-media presence for your brand has become a check-box item, a necessary part of building brand visibility and connecting with the

1.5 billion social-media users worldwide."  Beginning March 2, Creating Content for Social Media, taught by Karen Morris, will help you discover how to select, organize, and present information to your social media audience.

Harry For those among you who love words and the craft of writing,
Writing for Publication - a special Saturday workshop for writers -  is planned for March 14 from 9 am - noon. This time of encouragement, motivation, and guidance in how to write for publication will be presented by Harry Livermore, Editor of Valdosta Magazine.

So You Wanna Be an Actor!

"Lights, Camera, Action!"  Valdosta's own Sonny Shroyer has heard these directions many times in his acting career which began in 1972 with his first two movie roles "Like a Crow on a June Bug," and "Payday."

TV character Enos

Perhaps best known for his role as Deputy Enos Strate in the long running TV series "The Dukes of Hazzard," Sonny is a versatile actor who has appeared in many movies, as well as television and stage productions.

On Wednesday, January 21, Sonny will be presenting an LIR session "So You Wanna Be An Actor!" beginning at 11 am. He will discuss how he got into movies and television as well as answer questions from the audience. Come prepared to be entertained!

You Can Do This!

I once heard a Weight Watchers testimonial that unexpectedly had the ring of a universal truth. The gist of the woman's story had to do with the chaos that was in her life as she was in the midst of a divorce while trying to work and care for her young children. Truly she was experiencing the impact of the oft repeated Franois de la Rochefoucauld quote:  "The only thing constant in life is change."

Ironically, while big things seemed to be spiraling out of control, as a Weight Watchers participant, she realized that the one thing she was in complete control over was her food program choices. It was a leveling revelation for her that she could maintain a sense of awareness and focus on her goal of losing weight while all the rest of life whirled around her.

For all its flurry of activity which tends to bring added stress, December comforts us with a much anticipated break from school, work or at the very least, a break from our usual routine. It can also be a window of opportunity for those who might be looking for time and teacup-laptop-man.jpg space to improve a skill set, indulge a hobby or get started on teacher recertification through the convenience of an online course.

To use the change in schedule to its fullest potential you need to have a game plan regarding your physical and mental well-being. The time you set aside will allow you to take a breather from other demands on your time.

Learning online represents a wise investment for several reasons, including:

  • You can work on the lessons no matter where you are spending the holidays
  • Time set aside allows you to focus on a single goal
  • You can complete the required work on your own schedule
  • You are taking some time for yourself

Enjoy the holidays knowing that when you end up on the other side, you can have the feeling of having moved forward personally or professionally.

Choose from among several six-week instructor paced courses including these - each priced at $109:
