Colorful Community Day Kicks off the Year
Students and Staff celebrate being united as the school year begins with the annual Community Day festivities.
Did you know that there are only two days a year that the entire DBCR community is all together?  Instituted in 2012 by Principal Larry Savoy, Community Day now kicks off the year with all four classes present for the Mass of the Holy Spirit and a day of exciting activities before the students' work schedules commence.  Decked out in colors representing their classes, our returning students and staff officially welcomed the newest members of the community to DBCR through prayer, song, and a whole lot of silliness later in the day.  Truly a glimpse of Don Bosco's Oratory, Community Day at DBCR celebrates the diversity of our students and staff, and has no doubt become a lasting tradition to kick off each new year!
New Faculty and Staff Energize DBCR
2014-2015 New Faculty and Staff
Coming from as close by as Hyattsville and as far away as Haiti, the new crew of educators at DBCR has brought with it a wealth of experience and energy that matches the electricity in the building as the new Academic and Science Wing opens and enrollment climbs to 400 students!  The new science teachers have taken up residence in the new Chemistry, Biology and Physics labs, as new faculty and staff members settle in throughout the building to meet the increasing needs of the growing student body.  After a week of orientation for its newest members, the entire Educative Pastoral Team (EPT) came together for various sessions and a retreat emphasizing the Salesian charism and how we are to cultivate faith, family, future and fun within our walls.  Retreat leader, Rich Clark, President of St. Martin De Porres Cristo Rey in Cleveland, reminded the EPT that we are all about work and all about love.  "Being Cristo Rey," Clark noted, "means being creative."  Now in the first full week of classes, classrooms are arranged, lesson plans are underway, and creative enthusiasm abounds!

Over 150 New Students Hired for Bridge for Success
Freshman Nanette Boateng greets her supervisor, Annette Andrews of Ridgewells Catering, as she celebrates her successful completion of the Bridge for Success program and joins the Ridgewells team.
"You're Hired!" were the exciting words spoken to each of the new students at the closing ceremony for this year's Bridge for Success program.  After successfully completing three weeks of training for the corporate world, DBCR's newest students (and largest class to date!) learned of their work assignments and met their supervisors for the first time.   Corporate Work Study Program Executive Director Catina Negrete commented on the drive these new students brought to the Bridge for Success program and knows it will carry over into the workplace.  "We gave them the tools for success and prepared them in a safe environment, and they are exceeding expectations.  Overall, their energy is the most impressive quality about them."  The new students join their upperclassmen peers to form job teams at over 100 companies this year.

Taking Marriott by Storm:
Jazmin Guzman's ('12) Summer Internship
Jazmin Guzman ('12) meets Deborah Marriott Harrison, Director of Marriott International, Inc., during her summer internship in the Select Service and Extended Stay divisions.
"If I want to work for a company, Marriott is the kind of company I want to work for!" explained Jazmin Guzman, DBCR Class of 2012, after her recent experience as a Marriott summer intern.  Now a junior at Loyola University majoring in Marketing and Information Systems, Jazmin attributes the success she had in her internship this summer to DBCR's Corporate Work Study Program.  "CWSP prepared me to be exceptional in terms of work ethic.  They were really impressed and offered me an internship again next summer," Jazmin shared, as she beamed about the projects in which she took part.  Her responsibilities ranged from taking notes for Executive Vice Presidents, to planning events, to preparing a 45-minute presentation to Senior Executives on marketing strategies to Generation Y.   In addition to the summer's highlights of meeting Debbie Marriott Harrison and Arne Sorenson of Marriott, Jazmin especially valued getting to know Marriott's corporate culture, noting how much they really care about their employees. Some current DBCR students are discovering this firsthand since Marriott International has partnered with the school as a job sponsor this year.
