Voorhees readying for Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Women in History Celebration

Voorhees is planning its first Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Women in History Celebration. The event will take place on Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m. on the campus of Voorhees College in the Leonard E. Dawson Health and Human Resources Center. The purpose of this celebration is to honor, during Women's History Month, women who have made significant contributions to society in various areas.

Voorhees kicks off Black History Month Celebration

Voorhees College will kick off its annual Black History Month Celebration with Colonel Milford "Beags" Beagle, who will serve as the speaker for the program that will take place on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. in Massachusetts Hall Auditorium.

Beagle, a native of Enoree, S.C., entered the United States Army in 1990 after being commissioned as infantry officer.

Alumni group sponsors 52 students to see the movie "Selma"

On Sunday, January 18, Voorhees College students traveled by bus to The Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, S.C. to see the movie "Selma." Students had an opportunity to see the movie at no cost due to the sponsorship of 52 tickets by The Alumni Alliance of the White and True Blue.

January Alumni Highlight

The January 2015 alumni highlight is Darryl Johnson, who is a senior systems engineer for the U.S. Senate in Washington, DC.

Johnson received a bachelor's degree from Voorhees College before becoming the managing IT director at Principal Health Care and later at HealthScribe, Inc., the second largest medical transcription company in the United States.

Voorhees graduate Ravenell promoted to colonel

Craig M. Ravenell was recently promoted to the rank of colonel on January 9, 2015. Colonel Ravenel is a native of Pineville, S.C. and a 1992 graduate of Voorhees College earning a bachelor's degree in business administration. He earned a master's degree in administration from Central Michigan University in 2005.

Voorhees among 13 HBCUs to receive funding for cybersecurity education

Voorhees College will receive $1.3 million of the $25 million that has been awarded by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) over the next five years to train students for cybersecurity careers.

The purpose of this grant is to create a cybersecurity consortium that will consist of 13 HBCUs, two national labs and a K-12 school district.
