JOHN COHEN AT THE OLD TOWN SCHOOL OF FOLK MUSIC

Wednesday, October 29, 2014  ♦  8:00 PM

The Down Hill Strugglers featuring

John CohenConcert, Photography Display, and Book Event
World Music Wednesday

4544 N Lincoln Ave Gary and Laura Maurer Concert Hall 773.728.6000

Come see the man who inspired the song Uncle John's Band and has continued to turn generations on to folk and string band music.

Legendary old-time musician, musicologist, and photographer John Cohen will project his stunning photographs of Beat Poet Era in New York, Kentucky, South America, and more. John's most recent book "Here and Gone" will be available.

For the second set, John will play Old Time music with the Down Hill Strugglers, formerly known as the Dust Busters, an old time string band based out of Brooklyn, NY. They have released an album on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and are featured on the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers film, "Inside Llewyn Davis" produced by T-Bone Burnett. The Down Hill Strugglers are extending the legacy of the New Lost City Ramblers by performing alongside original Rambler John Cohen to present the authentic sound of old time music to a new generation.

"The Down Hill Strugglers bring back the true spirit of Old Time Music, where every singer invented his own performance. Besides being excellent musicians on fiddle, banjo and guitar, pump organ, harmonica, etc., they sing with the high voices that echo the sounds of young artists heard on the old 78s, evoking the spirit of the "Golden Era" of recording, and the mystery of their own identity.

The Down Hill Strugglers are reaching for new musical highs, and they play the kind of music I want to hear."
