CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
"SPECIALNESS AND SEPARATION"
II. "Specialness as a Substitute for Love"

8 Would it be possible for you to hate your brother if you were like him? Could you attack him if you realized you journey with him to a goal that is the same? Would you not help him reach it in every way you could if his attainment of it were perceived as yours? You are his enemy in specialness; his friend in a shared purpose. Specialness can never share, for it depends on goals that you alone can reach. And he must never reach them, or your goal is jeopardized. Can love have meaning where the goal is triumph? And what decision can be made for this that will not hurt you? Your brother is your friend because his Father created him like you. There is no difference. You have been given to each other that love might be extended, not cut off from one another. What you keep is lost to you. God gave you both Himself, and to remember this is now the only purpose that you share. And so it is the only one you have.

WHAT IS SIN?
What Is Sin
<AUDIO><VIDEO>
Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

Sin is insanity. It is the means

by which the mind is driven mad, and seeks

to let illusions take the place of truth.

And being mad, it sees illusions where

the truth should be, and where it really is.

Sin gave the body eyes, for what is there

the sinless would behold? What need have they

of sights or sounds or touch? What would they hear

or reach to touch? What would they sense at all?

To sense is not to know. And truth can be

but filled with knowledge, and with nothing else.

The body is the instrument the mind

made in its striving to deceive itself.

Its purpose is to strive. Yet can the goal

of striving change. And now the body serves

a different aim for striving. What it seeks

for now is chosen by the aim the mind

has taken as replacement for the goal

of self-deception. Truth can be its aim

as well as lies. The senses then will seek

instead the witnesses to what is true.

Sin is the home of all illusions, which

but stand for things imagined, issuing

from thoughts which are untrue. They are the "proof"

that what has no reality is real.

Sin "proves" God's Son is evil; timelessness

must have an end; Eternal Life must die.

And God Himself has lost the Son He loves,

with but corruption to complete Himself,

His Will forever overcome by death,

love slain by hate, and peace to be no more.

A madman's dreams are frightening, and sin

appears indeed to terrify. And yet

what sin perceives is but a childish game.

The Son of God may play be has become

a body, prey to evil and to guilt,

with but a little life that ends in death.

But all the while his Father shines on him,

and loves him with an Everlasting Love

which his pretenses cannot change at all.

How long, oh Son of God, would you maintain

the game of sin? Shall we not put away

these sharp-edged children's toys? How soon will you

be ready to come home? Perhaps today?

There is no sin. Creation is unchanged.

Would you still hold return to Heaven back?

How long, oh holy Son of God, how long?

God is the only goal I have today.

GUIDANCE from ELDER BROTHER

The way to God is through forgiveness here.

There is no other way. If sin had not

been cherished by the mind, what need would there

have been to find a way to where you are?

Who would still be uncertain? Who could be

unsure of who he is? And who would yet

remain asleep in heavy clouds of doubt

about the holiness of him whom God

created sinless? Here we can but dream.

But we can dream we have forgiven him

in whom all sin remains impossible,

and it is this we choose to dream today.

God is our goal; forgiveness is the means

by which our minds return to Him at last.

And so, our Father, we would come to You

in Your appointed way. We have no goal

except to hear Your Voice, and find the way

Your sacred Word has pointed out to us.

Lesson 256
God is the only goal I have today.

The quotes in this article are from the Foundation for Inner Peace edition, with the reference cited. There is also the quote references for similar quotes in the ACIM Original Edition

Sarah's Commentary:

While Jesus reminds us to make God our only goal today, which is a vertical perspective, he reminds us that we make that goal real for us through healing of relationships here, a horizontal perspective. And just in case we may think that the way to God is to retreat to a monastery to meditate and pray, the means given us in the Course is to heal through relationships. He says in this lesson, "There is no other way," (W.256.1.2) which is the case for many of us who follow the teachings laid out in the Course.

Jesus tells us that forgiveness is an illusion, but it is an illusion that ends all other illusions. In the context of the discussion on sin, it is an illusion because sin is not real and we have not sinned. We do believe that we have sinned because we have bought the ego's story that we have done something terribly wrong and are now guilty. Sin only seems real to us because Jesus says that it is "cherished by the mind." (W.256.1.3) In other words, when we release our belief in guilt and sin, we will remember who we are and where we are. We are at home in God, where we never left except in this dream.

The Course reminds us that sin is a false belief . It is based on our belief that we have done something wrong to creation in order to establish our individual identity. We believe that God had to be killed in order for us to exist, and the ego tells us that that was a horrendous crime on our part. Now we walk around feeling like we have done something terribly wrong but we can't place our finger on what that feeling is all about. Yet there is a sense of deep unworthiness, that we try to compensate for by being good.

We are reminded of our belief in sin whenever we blame and judge others for their indiscretions as a way to make them guilty. In comparison, we present our own face of innocence. Thus we hope that, at the end, they are the ones that get punished by God and we get off scot free. But while the ego tells us that this is a way to be rid of our guilt, it does not let us see that this is precisely how we keep it. We now seem to be buried deeper and deeper into the insanity. But Jesus shows us our way out of this darkness by redirecting our senses to see innocence in our brothers instead of guilt. Now we can choose to send out messengers of love instead of messengers that bring back evidence of our brother's guilt.

When we do see guilt in our brothers and make judgments, we willingly give them over to the Holy Spirit to have them reinterpreted by Him. It requires that we watch our minds for these judgments and, when they come up, realize that we are at a choice point to condemn or forgive. Which one we choose determines our decision for heaven or hell, and where we think our brother is, that is where we will see ourselves. "The sword of judgment is the weapon that you give to the illusion of yourself, that it may fight to keep the space that holds your brother off unoccupied by love." (T.31.VII.9.2)(ACIM OE T.31.VII.76) "Every time you feel a stab of anger, realize you hold a sword above your head. And it will fall or be averted as you choose to be condemned or free." (W.192.9.4-5) Which one will we choose? How much longer will we choose to suffer? Salvation is in our minds and the power of decision is our own.

In the section on "What is Sin?", we are reminded that sin is insanity, where the mind actually seeks to replace the truth. Why would we ever want to do that? What would truth reveal to us that we are so afraid of? Ultimately we are afraid to lose our specialness, our uniqueness and our identity, and thus we hold onto sin instead. Through forgiveness, we release the blocks in our own mind to the awareness that we have never separated from God. "Forgiveness is the means by which our minds return to Him at last." (W.256.1.9) Thus if we don't choose the means given to us to heal our minds, forgiveness, then we are not committed to our goal for God today.

Forgiveness is the means by which we learn that we are not egos with separate identities. Through forgiveness we learn that our reality is not contained in a body and that there is no death. Yet we fear to learn this as our sense of identity, individuality, specialness, and control all seem to be threatened, as we hang onto our perceived small selves. The world seems very real to us because we are always looking out through our senses which bring back evidence that the world of form is, indeed real and solid. Our eyes, and ears give us the evidence we are looking for that people are guilty. "Sin gave the body eyes, for what is there the sinless would behold? (W.PII.Q4.1.4)

It is important to remain vigilant in looking at our interpretations and being willing to ask for help to see our brothers through the eyes of Christ. That is why it takes so much work and discipline. It seems much easier to simply go with the 'evidence' offered by the ego because we like being right about our judgments of others. These judgments are based on the 'evidence' gathered by our senses. Yet it is the ego that directs those senses. Thus the information gathered is based on the beliefs that we hold rather than on what is true. Therefore we will always be wrong about how we are seeing our brothers when we use our own judgments to guide us. It can be unsettling to acknowledge that we just don't know. It may feel like the ground is shifting under our feet without any solid footing in this new territory that we are entering.

Jesus says, "The body is the instrument the mind made in its efforts to deceive itself. Its purpose is to strive." (W.PII. Q4.2.1-2) When we strive for things of this world, the implication is that they are real and that they are of value to us. So most of us do have other goals for which we strive, because we still think that there is something in the world that will make us happy, but this is all self deception. The more we see this for ourselves, the more we will be willing to give up these attempts at self deception, and instead use our striving for another purpose, which is to know the truth. Anything of the ego can be turned over to be used by the Holy Spirit for our awakening.

There is only one mind, but we have the illusion of many minds, all asleep and dreaming. So why did we set things up so miserably for ourselves? We have kept hidden from ourselves our secret goal which is to be the victim of others in all of our relationships so that we never have to get in touch with the real cause of our misery. We think that the world, beginning with our parents and continuing with all of our other relationships, are the cause of our unhappiness. But they are not. The world and all of our relationships are only a clever diversion that we have made to keep the real source of our unhappiness hidden from ourselves. What is that source? It is our all-consuming desire that the separation be real at any cost because we value our separate selves that we think we are. But the truth is that we can't separate from truth. We can only be unaware of who we are.

The world is the effect and not the cause of how we feel, no matter how much we may have convinced ourselves otherwise. So we need to change our thoughts about the world by looking within our own minds to uncover the blocks that we have placed there to the awareness of love's presence. The world is just an outward picture of our inward condition. Thus it serves a very important purpose as a classroom to look at bringing this picture back into our own minds so that we can see our unhealed perceptions. This is not an easy process. Learning to forgive takes practice. It is even more difficult as we look at the insanity of this world. But the insanity is helpful when we see it as a curriculum for healing. It does not matter if it comes in a movie, in nature, in circumstances in our lives, in people who seemingly attack us---it is all just our curriculum in whatever form it takes. Whatever unloving thoughts are brought up, in whatever form they appear (uneasiness, depression, anger, fear, worry, attack, insecurity, and so on---see lesson 39) we need to become aware of them and recognize that this is not the truth of who we are.

So everything in the world provides many opportunities to forgive. All of the things of this world have no other purpose and no other value except this. Can I simply learn to be grateful for the curriculum of this world and allow it to be the beautiful classroom that it is for my awakening? It has no other purpose than this. When we accept this purpose, then the world becomes meaningful. "And so, our Father, would we come to You in Your appointed way." (W.256.2.1)
His appointed way is that we forgive. In fact, that is the only way to God. No matter which path is chosen to God,  "Its central theme is always, 'God's Son is guiltless, and in his innocence is his salvation.'" (Manual1.3.5) What this means is that no matter which path we choose the underlying theme must be this. Why? When sin is cherished in our minds, we block God out, and the only way to let go of sin is to overlook it in our brother. When we forgive our brother, we can let go of our own guilt and know our own innocence. So today when we say, "God is the only goal I have today," (W.256) it requires that we forgive, because that is our way back to Oneness.

TEXT Paused for the Weekend

I. Introduction

1 Forget not that the motivation for this course is the attainment and the keeping of the state of peace. Given this state the mind is quiet, and the condition in which God is remembered is attained. It is not necessary to tell Him what to do. He will not fail. Where He can enter, there He is already. And can it be He cannot enter where He wills to be? Peace will be yours because it is His Will. Can you believe a shadow can hold back the Will that holds the universe secure? God does not wait upon illusions to let Him be Himself. No more His Son. They are. And what illusion that idly seems to drift between them has the power to defeat what is Their Will?

2 To learn this course requires willingness to question every value that you hold. Not one can be kept hidden and obscure but it will jeopardize your learning. No belief is neutral. Every one has the power to dictate each decision you make. For a decision is a conclusion based on everything that you believe. It is the outcome of belief and follows it as surely as does suffering follow guilt and freedom sinlessness. There is no substitute for peace. What God creates has no alternative. The truth arises from what He knows. And your decisions come from your beliefs as certainly as all creation rose in His Mind because of what He knows.

II. Specialness as a Substitute for Love

3 Love is extension. To withhold the smallest gift is not to know love's purpose. Love offers everything forever. Hold back but one belief, one offering, and love is gone because you asked a substitute to take its place. And now must war, the substitute for peace, come with the one alternative that you can choose for love. Your choosing it has given it all the reality it seems to have.

4 Beliefs will never openly attack each other because conflicting outcomes are impossible. But an unrecognized belief is a decision to war in secret, where the results of conflict are kept unknown and never brought to reason to be considered sensible or not. And many senseless outcomes have been reached, and meaningless decisions have been made and kept hidden to become beliefs now given power to direct all subsequent decisions. Mistake you not the power of these hidden warriors to disrupt your peace. For it is at their mercy while you decide to leave it there. The secret enemies of peace, your least decision to choose attack instead of love, unrecognized and swift to challenge you to combat and to violence far more inclusive than you think, are there by your election. Do not deny their presence nor their terrible results. All that can be denied is their reality but not their outcome.

5 All that is ever cherished as a hidden belief, to be defended though unrecognized, is faith in specialness. This takes many forms but always clashes with the reality of God's creation and with the grandeur which He gave His Son. What else could justify attack? For who could hate someone whose Self is his and whom He knows? Only the special could have enemies, for they are different and not the same. And difference of any kind imposes orders of reality and a need to judge that cannot be escaped.

6 What God created cannot be attacked, for there is nothing in the universe unlike itself. But what is different calls for judgment, and this must come from someone "better," someone incapable of being like what he condemns, "above" it, sinless by comparison with it. And thus does specialness become a means and end at once. For specialness not only sets apart but serves as grounds from which attack on those who seem "beneath" the special one is "natural" and "just." The special ones feel weak and frail because of differences, for what would make them special is their enemy. Yet they protect its enmity and call it "friend." On its behalf they fight against the universe, for nothing in the world they value more.

7 Specialness is the great dictator of the wrong decisions. Here is the grand illusion of what you are and what your brother is. And here is what must make the body dear and worth preserving. Specialness must be defended. Illusions can attack it, and they do. For what your brother must become to keep your specialness is an illusion. He who is "worse" than you must be attacked so that your specialness can live on his defeat. For specialness is triumph, and its victory is his defeat and shame. How can he live with all your sins upon him? And who must be his conqueror but you?

9 Could you attack each other if you chose to see no specialness of any kind between you? Look fairly at whatever makes you give each other only partial welcome or would let you think that you are better off apart. Is it not always your belief your specialness is limited by your relationship? And is not this the "enemy" that makes you both illusions to each other?

10 The fear of God and of each other comes from each unrecognized belief in specialness. For each demands the other bow to it against his will. And God Himself must honor it or suffer vengeance. Every twinge of malice or stab of hate or wish to separate arises here. For here the purpose which you share becomes obscured from both of you. You would oppose this course because it teaches you you are alike. You have no purpose that is not the same and none your Father does not share with you. For your relationship has been made clean of special goals. And would you now defeat the goal of holiness that Heaven gave it? What perspective can the special have that does not change with every seeming blow, each slight, or fancied judgment on itself?

11 Those who are special must defend illusions against the truth. For what is specialness but an attack upon the Will of God? You love your brother not while it is this you would defend against him. This is what he attacks and you protect. Here is the ground of battle which you wage against him. Here must he be your enemy and not your friend. Never can there be peace among the different. He is your friend because you are the same.
