News from GCSRW

Greetings from the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women! Whether your summer was a time for rest and relaxation or a busy season of change and new challenges, we hope you had a good one.  Meanwhile, we bring you news about women's status and roles in The United Methodist Church:

A good start toward gender parity at General Conference

July's "Women by the Numbers" article looked at the 11 annual conferences in the U.S. that elected General Conference delegates this year. We found 39 of the 84 delegates (46 percent) elected so far in the U.S. are women. More laywomen (23, or 55%) were elected than laymen, and more clergymen (26, or 62%) were elected than clergywomen, although women were represented at a higher percentage among delegates than in the U.S. clergy population (which is 25 percent).

The percentages compare favorably to the 2012 General Conference, when 44% of U.S. delegates were women, 44% of delegations were headed by women, and 39% of clergy delegates were women.

For more of a breakdown of the numbers (as well as an explanation of why some conferences were electing delegates nearly two years in advance of the 2016 General Conference), take a look at Erin Kane's article.

If your annual conference has not elected delegates yet and you're interested in how to go about seeking election, GCSRW offers a step-by-step guide.

Global Young People's Convo carries on despite storm
Audrey (right) met with GCSRW board member Phebe Crismo and UMC Bishop Rodolfo Alfonso Juan.
Audrey J. Krumbach, GCSRW's Director of Gender Justice and Education, presented a workshop at the Global Young People's Convocation in the Philippines earlier this month, despite the arrival of Typhoon Rammasun (Glenda). Although the eye of the storm passed right over the retreat center, the youth and young adults were taken to a central location where they could talk, sing and pray for people in nearby communities as they stayed safe from the raging storm.   None of the attendees was hurt, but the retreat center sustained some damage, so the convocation was moved to a resort near Manila where organizers carried on as best they could with the program.

It takes more than a storm to discourage us; GCSRW is excited to be planning another trip to the Philippines in November, when we will train Annual Conference leaders.
