SAVE THE DATE!!

Adopt-A-Book is coming!!
Beginning Monday, November 17

It's that time of year again!

Adopt-A-Book
is the library's annual fundraiser to help build the book collection.  An assortment of new adult fiction/non-fiction, young adult, and children's releases will be on display for patrons to "adopt" (purchase) for the library.  A commemorative book plate will be placed in the book and the adopting patron can be the first to check the book out of the library.

Adopt-A-Book is also the perfect gift for any holiday or occasion. The library will provide a lovely card that you can send to your family members or friends so they will know about the gift given in their name. Also a commemorative book plate will be inscribed with their name and added to the book.

An opening reception will be held on Monday, November 17 at 5:00 pm.  There will also be a special recognition of artists Mark Patnode, Lynda Wesley McLaughlin, and Sharon Tripp Griffis whose works are on display in the library and of our Volunteer of the Year, Peggy Scillieri.

Please go to our website soon for a list of Adopt-A-Book titles at  www.plnl.org.

Donations are tax-deductible.

Please call the library at 860-447-1411 x3 with questions.

SPECIAL EVENT!!

PUBLIC LIBRARY OF NEW LONDON TO HOST DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR USS THRESHER MEMORIAL AT CITY HALL OF NEW LONDON

On November 29 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm, the Public Library of New London will host the dedication of the temporary home of the permanent memorial in honor of the crew of the USS Thresher, which was lost at sea with 129 crew members on April 10, 1963. The New London City Council voted unanimously to work with the William Meredith Foundation, the Disabled American Veterans, and other community sponsors to establish this memorial in City Hall when a scheduled refurbishment has been completed. Though initiated by the City Council, this memorial has been totally funded by foundation sponsorship and private donations.

On April 10, 1963, the Thresher sank about 220 miles east of Boston after leaving Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine for deep-diving tests. All 129 men - 16 officers, 96 enlisted men and 17 civilian technicians - on board died. Among the 129 men lost aboard the Thresher were residents of New London, Groton, Norwich, Gales Ferry, Mystic, Uncasville, and Jewett City. Heads of state from around the world sent messages of condolence to America for the loss of this early nuclear vessel and its men in a period which had not yet seen the tragedies that were to follow in our history such as the assassinations of President Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King.

The memorial will feature three commissioned etchings by renowned artist, Stoimen Stoilov in addition to William Meredith's masterpiece poem, "The Wreck of the Thresher." The New London High School JROTC color guard will open the ceremony after which the art works will be unveiled and presentations made by military, government and foundation representatives. Family members of the lost crew members will be special, honored guests. The program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of an event particularly appropriate in a month when we remember the veterans who keep us safe and guard our freedom. Please join us to remember an important moment in the life and times of our community and the souls of the men who gave their lives that fateful day in spring of 1963.
