Westland Hosts
Household Hazardous Waste Day


Westland, MI - The City of Westland will once again host Wayne County's Household Hazardous Waste Day.  Residents are encouraged to utilize this free service of disposing of unwanted items. 

"Last year Westland residents showed up in great numbers to participate in the household hazardous waste day.  A total of 2,071 cars visited  the site that day and a total of 229,739 lbs of waste was collected. That's 115 tons of hazardous waste that was removed from homes in the area and eliminated from the normal waste stream," Stated Mayor Wild.

This years' Household Hazardous Waste Day will take place on  Saturday, August 16 at the Westland Shopping Center parking lot behind JC Penny.  Collection will run between 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  

Examples of acceptable items include : Household paints, stains, dyes, Floor wax, floor care products, carpet cleaner, Furniture polish, bathroom cleaners, stain removers, solvents, Pharmaceutical Waste (NON-CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES ONLY)  Nail polish, glue, Fertilizer, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, Antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, Automotive batteries and dry cell batteries, fluorescent bulbs (all types), Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, Mercury thermometers, thermostats and elemental mercury.  They will also be allowing electronic recycling of items such as : Computer CPU's, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, Cell phones, fax machines, copiers, and televisions.

The City of Westland also offers electronics recycling year round at our convenient recycling center located at 37137 Marquette (behind the DPS building).  Clothing recycling is also available at numerous blue bins located throughout the city. 

"Residents' efforts to preserve and protect the environment are greatly appreciated.  Together we can help keep the All American City clean and green," Mayor Wild concluded.
