Good Causes

September is "Hunger Action Month"

Ohio's rate of 16.1% of food insecure households is the third highest nationally.  It's also higher than the national rate of 14.7%, according to data from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Economic Research Service.

The SNAP CHALLENGE

Seminarian Joanna Samuelson has invited us to try to eat for a week on a SNAP budget ($4.50/day).  A few of us are giving this a go, while others are monitoring what they actually spend per week, per person on food.  How far will $31.50 per week take you?

The SNAP Challenge is a way to help raise awareness about the issue of hunger in America and helps give us a sense of what life is like for millions of low-income Americans facing hunger.

A Pressing Need for
Lunches on the Square

Every 4th Sunday we gather in the chapel to make sandwiches and bag lunches. The bagged lunches are delivered to 250 people residing in subsidized apartments in Newark.

The other part of the Lunches on the Square program is serving a meal in partnership with Trinity Episcopal church in Newark.

Over the past few months the number of people coming for the Sunday meal has continued to increase. We served a record number of meals on Sunday, August 24th. One hundred people came to eat. The fellowship hall at Trinity was full of families with young children, senior citizens, people who talked about being homeless, and individuals who were just hungry. We began serving food at 2:00. By 2:30 most of the food was gone.

Lunches on the Square is entirely supported by donations from both members of the United Church of Granville and friends of the program.

The increased need has resulted in an increase in the amount of funds needed to support this program. The Mission and Social action Committee is seeking additional donations. Donations can be made directly to United Church of Granville (write LOS on the memo line) or online through the church website (navigate to "Stewardship and Giving").

Earthkeeping Summit 2014 in Columbus

October 12 and 13th!

Dr. Gregory Hitzhusen, Ohio Interfaith Power and Light Board Chair, says, "The Summit will provide an opportunity to examine the challenges of the energy, climate, and environment work of our time, revisit the moral and ethical foundations of our response and offer resources to equip congregations to fulfill their responsibility for the stewardship of creation."

"Join us for one or both days--meet people from throughout the state who are engaged in earthkeeping: get ideas for your house of worship, share best practices and challenges, and be encouraged by the many faithful actions already underway."

"We're thrilled to have leading climate scientist and communicator, Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, with us on the evening of October 12th. Dr. Hayhoe was recently named to TIME's 2014 list of the 100 most influential people in the world and appeared in the climate change documentary Years of Living Dangerously. She co-authored a book with her husband, a minister, Climate for Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-based Decisions."

Hi folks,

It was a pleasure to have welcomed Jon Emler, Robert & Mindy Essex and Andrew Hill into the church last Sunday!

This weekend at church, remember the Birthday Bash after worship--a time to sit with folks from your same birthday month & enjoy a meal (& cake!) together.  At 2 PM, Chasing Ice will be shown in the chapel, and the BYCers gather for a Youth Bonfire at the Reiswigs later on that night.

This week, we welcome Will Darling to the staff of UCG as our custodian!  Will works as part of the custodial staff at Denison, and will be keeping up our buildings in the afternoons.  If you see Will, do introduce yourself and make him feel at home!

Peace,
Dwight
