Food For Fines Program
September 2014
Do you have overdue fees on your account? Beginning September 2 and running through September 30, patrons can pay down their fines by bringing canned goods and non-perishable food items to the library. All donations of food in September benefit the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center of New London. This does not apply to lost or damaged library materials.

Community Knit
Every Thursday, 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Learn the healing and calming effects of knitting and crocheting. Socialize with others with the same interest.
Help others by either teaching someone to knit or
making something needed by a child, a senior citizen,
or a homeless person.
Bring your knitting materials! Some materials may be
provided. Location: Board Room.

Film and Discussion with Lonnie Braxton - Slavery By Another Name

Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities that uses the power of documentary films to encourage community discussion of America's civil rights history. NEH has partnered with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to develop programmatic and support materials for the sites. New London Maritime Society's program at Public Library of New London is one of 473 institutions across the country awarded a set of films chronicling the history of the Civil Rights Movement.
SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME
Even after slavery, new forms of forced labor kept thousands of African Americans in bondage until the onset of World War II.

Introduction to Computers

This hands-on class is for the beginner who has little or no experience using a computer. It will introduce you to the basics of computer terminology and the popular word processing program
Microsoft WORD. There are no prerequisites for this class. Seats

Book Discussion - I Am Malala
Saturday, September 6 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
We will discuss "I Am Malala" by Malala Yousafzai.
Malala was a student in Pakistan when the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley. Her father had encouraged his daughter to attend school in a society that gives more privileges to sons than daughters. She spoke out for her right to an education and was shot in the head while riding a bus home from school. After a miraculous recovery, Malala became a global symbol of peaceful protest and at age 16, became the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Copies of the book will be available in the weeks prior to the meeting.
Book discussion will be facilitated by Mongi Dhaouadi, the executive director
of Council of American- Islamic Relations CT (CAIR CT).
