August Tracking Incentive!

Workshop participants get hands on training at Millstone Farm in canning tomatoes.

"I eat local because I CAN
"

We know that growing the movement takes work, so we're providing a little more excitement to help you stay on track with your pledge!

There are 3 more weeks to track your locally produced/caught purchases this month! At month's end we will randomly select a campaign participant that has tracked consistently throughout the month to receive this month's tracking incentive!

Millstone Farm of Wilton, CT has graciously offered to provide a space for the winner at their "Canning and Preserving Tomatoes" Workshop at their farm on September 27th from 10 am to 1 pm. An excellent way to discover and learn about the ways to continue to enjoy the summer's bounty into the fall and winter!

Bread n' Butter Pickles
Seasonal Recipe

Even though we love eating all the fresh, seasonal products that are readily available now...it's also a good time to start canning some of those crops too, so you can enjoy them this winter!

16 cups sliced CT cucumbers
2 cups diced CT pepper
1 cup diced CT onion and garlic
salt
5 cups of sugar
1.5 teaspoons Turmeric
1.5 teaspoons Celery Seed
2.5 teaspoons Mustard Seed
3 cups Apple Cider Vinegar

Thinly slice cucumbers into 1/4" slices. Cube peppers and onions and thinly slice the garlic. Once vegetables are cut to size, layer and add a generous dash of salt in between layers with ice cubes. Refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours, even better if stored over night.

After refrigeration time, drain excess liquid (from melted ice), add remaining ingredients and combine in one pot. Cook on high until boiling. Make sure canning supplies are properly sterilized. Use ladle and wooden spoon to pack the juices and pickles into the jar.

Fill, cap and place jar upside down. Once all pickles are done, tip jars over and place in hot water bath for a minimum of 10 minutes.
