Call to General Synod 30 --

Come to Cleveland

Cleveland is once again becoming a very special place. Not only is it home to the UCC national offices, it is also the site of the upcoming Thirtieth General Synod of the United Church of Christ. Yes! The General Synod of the UCC will take place in Cleveland, Ohio, June 26-30, 2015, and you are invited! Together we will build beloved community around the theme, "Unexpected Places" -- finding God in "Unexpected Places."

Of course, the General Synod is where we, the UCC, conduct the business of the wider church. However, you will also experience worship that inspires, speakers that challenge and inform, worship that equips, and exhibits that offer a full range of resources for ministry and mission. Additionally, Synod will feature hands-on volunteer service projects in the greater Cleveland area. There is no doubt about it! Come to General Synod, and you will find ample opportunity to work, learn, pray and even play.

This General Synod will be the third to take place in Cleveland. Cleveland was the site of our founding General Synod 1957. The city hosted us once again in 1989. However, if you have never been to Cleveland or if you have not visited in a few years, you may be pleasantly surprised, because Cleveland is a very different city, with much more to see and do than was possible just a few years ago.

Cleveland's new state-of-the-art convention center will be the main venue for General Synod. Synod events, including the Youth @ General Synod program, will be held in the downtown area, where hotels are conveniently located and where there are many restaurants and entertainment venues within walking distance. Delegates and visitors will be able to make their way to various Synod and Pre-Synod events with ease.

Speaking of Synod events, the primary service project will embrace our next all-church mission initiative, "Reading Changes Lives." Delegates and guests will have the chance to tour our national office building, not far from the convention center.

Registration will open on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014. We look forward to hosting you and your family in Cleveland. So come! Join in the company of sisters and brothers in Christ from around the nation and throughout the world in worshipful work and meaningful mission. Come and explore the possibility of finding God in "unexpected places."

Peace and blessings,

Geoffrey A. Black

Food insecurity and hunger is an issue that threatens health and well-being of adults and children around the world.  There is no easy resolution to ending this complicated issue, but there is one way to help with immediate and urgent needs: balanced high nutrition meals. A team of nutritionists has developed a macaroni and cheese dish for distribution to local food banks and pantries that can be put together in assembly-line fashion.  Each package contains: six 11 gram servings of protein, dehydrated vegetables, 21 essential vitamins and minerals.  Packages are simple to prepare: boil package contents in water for twenty minutes; and each sealed package has a shelf life of three years.

Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church in Allentown will be hosting a Food Packaging Event to assemble 5000 of these meals.  As part of our 275th Anniversary Celebration, we want to invite individuals and groups from other churches and civic organizations to join us.  Any age may participate in this event.  (Contributions toward the cost of the food packages are also welcome!)

DATE AND TIME:

Saturday October 11, 2014; from 1 pm to 4 pm (approximately; we may finish sooner depending on the number of volunteers)

PLACE:

Jerusalem Western Salisbury Chapel, located to the rear of the church building at 3441 Devonshire Road, Allentown PA 18103

MEALS WILL BE DONATED

At the Allentown Crop Walk on October 12, 2014

The Pension Board has recently announced that after two consecutive years of no rate increase, the Non-Medicare Health Plan will experience an average increase of 4%.  Individual contribution rates will vary depending upon changes to tier and/or ages bands as of January 1, 2015.  There will be no increase in the dental or vision plans for 2015.  Specific contribution rates will be communicated to churches and participants in the very near future.

Gwilym Williams Scholarship

SCHOLARSHIPS

If you are a college or graduate student who is preparing for a career either as a/an

ordained minister, certified teacher or educator,

doctor of medicine

then you may qualify for a scholarship grant from the

Gwilym T. Williams Scholarship Fund

This Trust Fund, created over a generation ago by a now deceased PNEC benefactor from Scranton, is administered by the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ. The purpose of this Fund is to provide financial assistance for post-secondary students enrolled in accredited institutions of higher learning, and who are preparing to embark on a career either as an ordained minister, a certified teacher or educator, or a doctor of medicine.

Grants are limited by stipulation of the Trust to students pursuing one of these three career options, and who are also currently members in good standing of a PNEC congregation. Financial assistance will be awarded only to help pay the institution-stipulated costs of tuition and/or housing.

You are required to submit to the PNEC office all application materials (your application, certification of an acceptable program of study, your school's financial bill) before your request will be considered. Application materials must be in our office by October 1st in order to be considered for a grant for the (preceding) summer and/or (current) fall terms, and by March 1st in order to be considered for a grant for the (preceding) winter and/or (current) spring terms. Reimbursement checks will be issued directly to successful applicants. Even if you have received a Gwilym T. Williams scholarship in the past, you must reapply in order to be considered for a new grant. Applicants are awarded a maximum ten grants for undergraduate work, and ten (more) grants for post-graduate studies.

Please contact Beverly McClure at the Conference Office for an application packet. You can reach her at 610-826-3113 or [email protected]. Or simply go to www.pnec.org to obtain the application packet.

Please note: your application will not be processed until all three application materials are received in the PNEC office.

CROP HUNGER WALK

Sunday, October 12, 2014

St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Ott & Walnut Streets, Allentown

Registration will begin at 12:45 PM at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church and the Walk begins at 1:30 PM. Two opportunities are available to involve all ages:

1. 6-mile walk through Allentown with rest stops along the way.

2. Golden Mile walk for Golden Agers, families with children or dogs, or anyone wanting a leisurely pace.

For those unable to walk with us on the 12th, donations to the Allentown CROP Walk can be made online on the Allentown CROP Walk page on the Church World Service website.

As a special treat this year, at the rest stop at the main offices of both the Conference of Churches and the Ecumenical Food Bank on Chew Street in Allentown, live music will be provided by St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church Band.

Over 1,000 CROP Walks will take place this fall around the country, 124 in Pennsylvania alone. Each year more than 2.5 million friends and neighbors walk, volunteer, or sponsor a walker in CROP Walk communities across the U.S.One quarter of the total proceeds of the Allentown CROP Hunger Walk will be shared between The Lehigh Conference of Churches Soup Kitchen and the Allentown Area Ecumenical Food Bank.

Food for Thought -CROP walkers help worldwide and locally:

  • In 2013, the Lehigh Conference of Churches Soup Kitchen and Daybreak drop-in center served over 63,000 meals, a record. 1,905 meals were served to children.

  • Each year, the Allentown Ecumenical Food Bank provides food for over 30,000 of our neighbors.

  • More than 17 million American households, 14.5% of Americans, are not certain where their next meal will come from.

It is not too late for your church, school or community organization recruiter to pick up Recruiter Packets at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Crest Blvd. & Tilghman St. or The Lehigh Conference of Churches main office at 534 Chew Street.

In addition of raising funds, everyone is reminded that non- perishable food items will be received the day of the walk by the Allentown Ecumenical Food Bank. The Food Bank is desperately in need of peanut butter, jelly, and canned soups.

For more information about this year's CROP Hunger Walk, please contact Chairperson Rev. Dianne Kareha at 610-391-8210 or e-mail [email protected] or contact Conference Director of Administration Abby Goldfarb at 610-433-6421 or e-mail [email protected].
