In 2012, IMLS, MacArthur Foundation, ULC and the Association of Science-Technology Centers launched a planning and design process to create 24 teen-centered Learning Labs across the U.S. Join members of the Learning Labs commu  nity for a conversation about this path breaking initiative; hear about early research findings and engage in discussion about critical issues such as collaborating with community partners, teen engagem  ent, space design, staffing models, understanding youth outcomes and funding strategies.

Attendees will be introduced to and discuss a framework to think about and authentically evaluate their current services and identify opportunities for improvement based on community need. This session will be built on the framework of Edge that assesses technology based on community value, engaging the community and organizational management. From this shared understanding, participants will join group discussions based on a case study and share solutions and best practices in using technology to advance learning.

National Summer Learning Day 2014 takes place on June 20. This national advocacy day is designed to spread awareness about the importance of high-quality summer learning activities offered to help close the achievement gap for our nation's youth and support healthy development in communities all across the country.  Libraries are critical partners in community summer learning initiatives but are not always recognized for their role - register your library's summer learning program and get on the national map that the National Summer Learning Association is building NOW! 

 
This summer, the National Center for Families Learning presents Camp Wonderopolis™, a free, science-themed, online-learning summer camp featuring content tailored for gaming and inquiry-based learning. Kids and parents can engage in Wonder lessons to earn Wonder Cards� (42 in all); try out fun hands-on maker activities using everyday objects; and enter weekly contests for a chance to win Camp prizes. Campgrounds officially open June 16. Find out more and register.


A New Summer Learning Challenge
  
On "The Tonight Show" this week, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel won a promise from Jimmy Fallon. If city kids read at least 2.4 million books this summer, Fallon will broadcast from Chicago. Watch the clip with Mayor Emanuel on the Jimmy Fallon show!

MEMBER UPDATES
Thank You, Raymond!

Long-time Director of Miami-Dade Public Library System, FL, Raymond Santiago has announced his retirement, effective August 1.  In a communication to his staff, Raymond noted, "It has been my honor to spend the last 24 years of my 43-year library career with the Miami-Dade Public Library System....Without question, this Library system has achieved remarkable success....My tenure here has sped by faster than I would have imagined years ago; all its highs and lows are embedded in my mind (and) I will always treasure these memories."

Irvin Mayfield, Chair of the New Orleans Public Library Board and ULC Executive Board Member, was honored with a special award from the Gordon Parks Foundation at a gala event in New York City this week. He was honored with the likes of Designer Vera Wang, Artist Lorna Simpson and Fimmaker Ed Zwick.
