Facebook Cracking Down on Clickbait:
Will This Affect Your Facebook Marketing Plan?

This week Facebook announced some new tweaks to its powerful News Feed algorithm, one of which is aimed at reducing the amount of clickbait in its users' feeds.

The company will now track how much time users are spending off the site when going through various links - a measure that it will use to determine if the link was interesting or not - and incorporate that in determining how those stories rank in News Feed. The idea is that if a user spends a significant amount of time off-site and then returns to Facebook, there was something interesting or engaging in that link.

A small set of publishers who are frequently posting links with click-bait headlines that many people don't spend time reading after they click through may see their distribution decrease in the next few months. Facebook is making these changes to ensure that click-bait content does not drown out the things that people really want to see while checking their News Feed.

Member Spotlight: Outrigger Surf
Can you please tell us a brief history of your business?
I was born and raised on the sunny shores of Laguna Beach, CA, and have always been active in water sports, learning to surf from some of So Cal's surf legends like Corky Carroll and Larry Burtlemann. As a mom of six water-babies, I had to incorporate the needs of my growing family and my personal desire for physical activity and competition. To do this, I opened Keli's Outrigger and Paddle Sports retail shop in 2007, the first of its kind in Southern California. My new shop Outrigger Surf, Inc. has expanded to include outrigger, paddle board and paddle manufacturing. I also provide lessons, coaching, party packages, team building events, clothing, sports nutrition, accessories and anything outrigger and paddle sports, in-store and online. Teach It, Coach It, Race It, Make It - is my mantra!

Why did you join the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce?
I can't think of a better way to be part of the community. It has given a lot to me and this is one way I can give back.

Are you involved in the local community?
I have been involved for many years with the "Battle of the Paddle", one of the largest SUP races in the world. I started and continue to run the children's program.

Can you tell us a fun fact about your business that most people wouldn't know?
I was the first stand-up paddle concession on Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor in 2007. I was one of the first to start the SUP craze.

Do you have any piece of advice for new businesses owners?
Yes, it needs to be your passion because it takes a lot of time and hard work to be successful. Devote yourself, learn from your mistakes and most of all don't let anyone stop you. Never give up and Good Luck!
