MGH Summer Jobs celebrates another successful season

It's back to school for the 146 high school and 36 college students from Boston, Chelsea and Revere who spent the summer working at MGH. Fifty-nine MGH departments, labs and health centers hosted students this summer. MGH is the second largest summer employer of youth in the City of Boston.

Opioid overdose medication now available at MGH pharmacies in Boston and Revere

To prevent deaths from opioid overdose, MGH patients or family members can now request intranasal Naloxone (Narcan) without a prescription at the MGH Outpatient Pharmacies in Boston and Revere. Naloxone reverses opioid overdoses, saving lives instantly. Dr. Sarah Wakeman, MGH CCHI Medical Director for Substance Use Disorders, said that Naloxone will be filled under a standing order, and the MGH pharmacists will provide training on how to use the medication.
MGH Chelsea responds to Central American immigrant crisis
MGH Chelsea has stepped up to meet the needs of hundreds of children and families who are recent immigrants from Central America. MGH Chelsea physicians and community health workers were interviewed about this work recently on WBUR. Read the WBUR CommonHealth post (here) and listen to the WBUR Radio Boston interview with Urgent Care Chief Dr. Brent Ragar (here). This work builds on the more than decade history of providing Refugee Health Assessments though a Mass. Department of Public Health grant.
EPA funds collaboration to reduce childhood asthma
The Neighborhood Developers, MGH Chelsea and the City of Chelsea are collaborating on a $25,000 EPA Healthy Communities grant to reduce the home asthma triggers for children in Chelsea. The grant focuses on teaching sessions and community building among parents who live in the same neighborhood and have children with asthma, on in-home assessments and on education and communication with landlords and code enforcers about ways to reduce the affects of unhealthy homes on children's asthma.
Recovery Month events in Charlestown and Revere
CCHI-supported coalitions in Charlestown and Revere will hold events in September to recognize National Recovery Month. The Charlestown Substance Abuse Coalition sponsored former NBA player and recovering drug addict Chris Herren's talk at the Charlestown Community Center on September 9th. CSAC and Revere CARES will sponsor candlelight vigils to remember the lives cut short due to alcohol and drugs. (Charlestown, September 20, 6:30 p.m. at Hayes Square & Revere, September 21, 7 p.m. at the gazebo on Revere Beach). Revere CARES also will sponsor the 4th Annual Community Walk for Recovery led by Revere Public School students and staff.
MGH awarded Equity Care Award from the AHA

The American Hospital Association (AHA) awarded MGH the first AHA Equity Care Award in recognition of efforts to reduce health care disparities among patients and to promote diversity within the hospital's leadership and staff. Joseph Betancourt, MD (center), director of the Disparities Solution Center (DSC), accepted the award at the Health Forum-AHA Leadership Summit in San Diego in July.

Revere families to learn how to eat better for less
Revere on the Move (ROTM), an initiative of the Revere CARES coalition, recently received a $2,500 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts to expand opportunities for healthier living and nutrition education in Revere. ROTM will partner with Share our Strength Cooking Matters to teach low income families how to shop for and prepare nutritious meals on a budget
