New hires with soft skills: What employers in Ontario need now!

computer_people.jpg Recently staff at WPH interviewed over 60 employers regarding their company's workforce needs and experiences. This information will be presented to key stakeholders at our community consultation in September. With the input of employers and the community, this information will be used to inform our Labour Market Plan.

One of the dominant themes during discussions with employers from all sectors was that soft skills such as communication, the ability to learn quickly and flexibility are amongst the most challenging to find in new hires.

A report released in May 2014 on the regional breakdowns of the 'National Business Survey' from the Canadian Education and Research Institute for Counselling (CERIC) shows similar results. CERIC commissioned the Environics Research Group to survey 500 employers of varying size to provide views on issues facing labour and hiring across the country.

Businesses in Ontario (73%) report the most difficulty with finding employees with soft skills, while the average was nearly 10 percentage points lower across the other regions (64%).
