Dear Friend of the BABC,
Over the past couple of months, we have hosted a number of compelling and relevant events for our Members.
May's Spring European Networking Evening was hosted by Patron member Cooley and in partnership with the German American Business Association and the French American Chamber of Commerce San Francisco. The Transatlantic Conference took place in London this year and the theme was 'Future Cities - Smart, Sustainable, Social and was attended by several BABC members including our Chairman, Colin Brown, Executive Director, Jo Healey, Board Directors Stuart Keirle and Kathleen Kimura and Members Laura Guzman (Microdesk) and Chris Tholstrup (Venturexcel). The ever important topic of Britain and its membership in the EU was discussed at the Brexit event where the theme was, "What Happens if the UK leaves the European Union?". As you know the EU Referendum in the UK takes place on June 23rd.
Our 60th Annual General Meeting was held on June 1st where attendees were updated on last year's business milestones and given a sense of what is to come for the 2016 / 2017 fiscal year. A few days later, we joined with the Australian American and Swedish American Chambers of Commerce to present the 6th Annual Summer Golf Scramble at the Presidio Golf Course where 88 players competed for prizes and bid on auction items. Our thanks to all the sponsors, donors and BABC Players who helped make the day a roaring success!
Our Top Tier members enjoyed a private reception at the Residence of HM Consul General, Priya Guha - our thanks to Priya for hosting and opening up your home for our special guests. As you may know, Priya returns to the UK at the end of July and we shall miss her in San Francisco.
We celebrated Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's 90th Birthday at a Ball at The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. Over 260 guests attended the black tie dinner dance with music supplied by The Sun Kings, a Beatles tribute band. It was a terrific event that also honored two wounded warriors from The Invictus Foundation who said a few words about their experiences as veterans and athletes at the Invictus Games.
Our Young Professionals Committee hosted another successful Happy Hour at the Americano Restaurant at Hotel Vitale. Their events now take place on the second Tuesday of each month and continue to grow in attendance.
Finally, thank you to all the new members who have joined the BABC over the last month and to all of our members showing their continued support of our growing organization by renewing and upgrading your memberships. Please take a moment to visit their websites and learn more - they may be able to help you!
Best, Nick Unkovic President, BABC Northern California

H.M. Consul General to San Francisco
Ms. Priya Guha
By now you may have heard that British Airways (finally) found its way to San Jose in May! It was the first of three new non-stop flights connecting the Bay Area with home. Just one week after British Airways started its new flight, Norwegian Airlines began offering affordable and direct connections from Oakland to London's Gatwick Airport. And next year, Virgin Atlantic will begin a new route from San Francisco International Airport to Manchester.
I was lucky enough to be on the inaugural BA flight, which coincided with British American Business' Annual Meeting. It was lovely to see some of you there. I enjoyed representing us by speaking about the Bay Area on a panel and at the new Chase Entrepreneurship Awards.
The new BA flight allows me additional options to get to the UK - indeed it took my parents home this week! And now all of you can take advantage of the convenient connection from Silicon Valley directly to London for important meetings without the stress of filtering through one airport many miles away. You may well have been one of the 92 businesses in and around Silicon Valley who signed up to support bringing such a flight to San Jose. Our friends at Mineta San Jose International Airport tell us Britain was the number one destination requested by their travellers.
That doesn't come as a surprise. Alongside the US, the UK was one of
the two fastest growing major advanced economies in 2015. The preliminary estimate of UK GDP growth in 2015 was 2.2%, and UK GDP is projected to grow to 4.2% in 2016. To attract investment, we have lowered corporation tax to 20% today and 17% by 2020. Investments being made in the market show how great the UK is as a place to do business: VCs have invested $1.3 billion in the UK in the first three months of the year. That's right up there with Silicon Valley, which saw $5.7 million in VC investment in the same period.
So the business opportunity's there - and now the flight connectivity to facilitate it. The perfect combination!
