NEWS FROM THE CABOOSE
I was gearing up to finish the newsletter tonight when I decided to ask Heather's to whip up an inspiring take-out for me. Oh, my... Lamb Pot Pie never tasted so good, not even dare I say in Scotland where I sampled many a fine pot pie. Thank you Rene and Mary!
Considering hidden treasures - though, packed on a rainy Monday night there's no doubt that Heathers has been discovered - I'm wondering if you've ever taken a meander through Town Manager Mike Scanlon's "Weekend Update." There's a fresh one up today and it's full of interesting news about town.
With re-caps from Planning, Public Works and Parks, Gardens & Forestry, you'll read about improvements to the Town's parks, Historic Basalt tour updates, the establishment of the Safe Routes to School Community Coalition, and the schedule for this year's Leaf Drop. There's also the Police Report which is always enlightening, though I've yet to see the story of the reported sighting a few weeks ago of a bear in the Caboose - yes, our Caboose - and the funny mishaps that followed.
For those of you who are following that all-encompassing, but seldom definitive, concept of "development" in Basalt, you'll also find info on what's happening with the Rocky Mountain Institute's Innovation Center (it's breaking ground on October 15!) and the Roaring Fork Conservancy's new river building (both at the Pan & Fork site on Two Rivers Road), RealAmerica Development's affordable housing project, and the hotel in Willits. It's all there, evolving like your favorite night-time show. The difference is that it's here, right in your town, and it's a wonderful process to watch.
It's even better to be involved. A new initiative from the Town Manager involves engaging the community - that's us - in discussions about where we're going and how. He tells us he's bringing in top-notch speakers to discuss "leadership and creating the capacity to change." What is change anyway? Is it flipping up-side down on our heads, or is it evolving to be what we've always been or wanted to be, only better. It could be either, and the outcome depends on how we go about looking at what's around us and seeking the right path.
Chicago Sun-Times journalist Sydney J. Harris wrote: "Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to remain the same but get better."
So how do we get where we want to be, the same only better?
Mike Scanlon talks about a model called "Adaptive Leadership" which, he says, "professes a very simple central tenant: Leadership is an activity that individuals and communities can direct. Leadership isn't about a single individual when you get to big/complicated problems. It's about engaging whomever is needed in helping untangle and solve the problems in front of us."
By now, you've probably read all about the Our Town Planning process - hundreds of people and thousands of ideas coming together to create a vision for the heart of our community. Now, the Town has created a "Downtown Area Advisory Committee" to support the Town Council in realizing a scenario that best reflects all the creative, insightful input from townspeople of all ages and all walks of life. And it doesn't end there. The Town invites each and everyone of us to continue to play a role, however big or small. Leadership is more than a person, it's a thoughtful, powerful movement of many hearts and minds in a synergetic direction.
The Town of Basalt, its elected leaders, and its staff hold many of the same beliefs and process goals as the Basalt Chamber. That is, that "we will only impact change in the downtown area if we can get the entire community moving in the same direction." In this manner, we believe we can best serve our members.
Speaking of moving together, we've had a terrific and rewarding couple of months with 37 new businesses joining, and nearly 100 renewing members in just the last 30 days. Thank you to all! You must know that we can't do what we do without you and we welcome your support and participation.
And there's more action sweeping us along. Last week I described the launching of our new "Creative Spaces" project in downtown Basalt. Spearheaded by the Chamber and Toklat Gallery dynamo Lynne Mace, we've now filled our first "empty" storefront with beautiful art. The opening is next Friday, October 10, so please stop by to see what a few people can create in the whiz of a few days and how a town can awaken to a new vision.

The "Creative Spaces" project, launched by Toklat Gallery and the Basalt Chamber, is a collaboration between artists, galleries, property owners, and the business community. We fill the Town's prime empty spaces with art until they are leased or sold and we welcome a new business to Basalt.
Thanks to the Town of Basalt and space owner Mike Waters for their contributions of space and materials for this premiere showing. If you're an owner of unoccupied commercial space or an artist interested in displaying your work contact us at the Chamber. We also welcome volunteers who enjoy organizing and filling space creatively to help this program spread around the town.

JOB GROWTH IN COLORADO: UP OR DOWN?
In mid-September the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment reported that the state had lost 700 jobs the previous month. Yet, according to analyst Gary Horvath, "this abrupt downturn is not supported by other data or the business and economic activity on the street." Horvath points out that the average wage and salary employment for Colorado during the first eight months of the year is 64,800 greater than the same period last year, with with leading job growth in the professional business services and tourism. He projects that the state is on track to add 70,000 jobs this year. Let's see how that pans out.

 The FISHING REPORT by Frying Pan Anglers
Dry fly fishing on the Frying Pan River is still producing trophy fish. The Green Drakes are still relevant for about 2 hours in the middle of the day. BWO's and Caddis can be used to catch rising fish throughout the day. The Roaring Fork River is flowing clear and fish are holding towards the middle of the river in deep slow pockets. They can be caught using the Crawling Caddis, as they are largest in size during this time of year.
