2nd Annual Bucksport Arts Festival, 8/13

The 2nd Annual Bucksport Arts Festival will be returning to the waterfront walkway this summer on Saturday, August 13th with a few familiar faces. Over 75% of artists who participated in 2015 have already registered for the 2016 festival, and registration continues to grow each month as new artists apply before the July 15th deadline.

It's no surprise that many artists are choosing to come back to Bucksport. The location is ideal to draw summer tourists wandering along the coastline, and the views are unmatched by any local festival. Artists that participated last year reported "it was my best single show day ever" and "it was a record breaking day". Advertised throughout the state, the festival brings in visitors and shoppers from across Maine and New England.

In addition to returning 2015 artists, several new artists will be joining the festival this coming August.

The 2nd Annual Bucksport Arts Festival will be held Saturday, August 13th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on the waterfront walkway. In addition to artists and craftspeople, there will also be local food vendors and music for all to enjoy. The event is being organized in partnership with the Bucksport Area Cultural Arts Society (BACAS), an organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the cultural and performing arts for Bucksport and surrounding communities. Visit www.bacasmaine.org for more information on their upcoming events, or to apply for the Bucksport Arts Festival.

The 2016 Bucksport Arts Festival is made possible by Seaboard Federal Credit Union with additional support by WLBZ 2. Seaboard FCU is a member-owned cooperative, whose mission is to provide quality financial services to all members at fair and reasonable rates and terms.

Leaders & Luminaries Award competition
Camden National Bank, through The Bank of Maine Charitable Foundation, is accepting nominations for the 2016 Leaders & Luminaries Award competition. The statewide search honors four of Maine's leading nonprofit board members and presents them with cash awards for their organizations. Leaders & Luminaries recognizes board members who have effectively used inspiration, creativity and ingenuity in board governance and whose contributions have led to the organization's growth, successful transition or financial stability. Each of the selected leaders will be presented with cash prizes totaling $20,000.

"We believe in honoring individuals who have made important contributions in their communities through outstanding strategic leadership," said Greg Dufour, president and chief executive officer of Camden National Bank. "Our nonprofit sector is frequently challenged with limited resources and funding, yet there are people doing amazing work despite the challenges that exist. As a community bank, we want to be able to recognize these inspirational leaders and provide financial support to help them further their organization's goals."

The Leaders & Luminaries Award competition is open to any board director of a 501(c)(3) organization based in Maine who can demonstrate how inspiration, creativity and ingenuity in governance has led to his or her organization's success. Four awards totaling $20,000, presented through The Bank of Maine Charitable Foundation, will be awarded to this year's winners at a special ceremony held during the Maine Association of Nonprofits (MANP) Executive Leadership Forum, "Building Board Engagement," on  November 10, 2016 at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport.

An independent selection committee, appointed by Camden National Bank, will select the four winners. Each Leaders & Luminaries award winner will receive $5,000 for his or her nonprofit organization. Last year's award recipients included Catherine Powers of Bath Housing Authority, Pete Bixler of Bay Chamber Concerts in Rockport, William Branch of Kennebec Behavioral Health in Waterville, and Lynn Gierie of the Robbie Foundation in Scarborough.

Deadline for entries is September 2, 2016.

For complete details and entry information, visit the Camden National Bank website at  www.CamdenNational.com/leaders-and-luminaries-2016.
Be a Part of the Growing Cultural Arts Scene
In the Bucksport Bay Area!

The Bucksport Area Cultural Arts Society (BACAS) has been promoting a wide array of arts since its inception in 1999. In October of 2003, with wide support from the community, the Bucksport Performing Arts Center (BPAC), a state-of-the-art facility, opened its doors. Since that time its stage has showcased everything from fashion shows to ballet productions to world renowned musicians and singers. BACAS is especially proud of and enthused about the Bucksport Arts Festival, which enters its second year on  August 13th .

BACAS is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the cultural and performing arts for Bucksport and surrounding communities. Our website not only highlights our initiatives, but also aims to garner ever expanding support for the arts in the Bucksport Bay Community.

Our meetings are held at the Bucksport Town Office on the last Tuesday of each month at  6:30 p.m. , with the exception of December. We encourage you to consider becoming a member of BACAS, and we invite you to attend our meetings to get an idea of what we do and what we want to accomplish. Please visit our website,  www.bacasmaine.org , for our complete, and exciting, schedule of events, membership applications, past productions, rental information, and general information. You will be glad you did.
BACAS Begins Its "Sound Waves on the Waterfront" Fundraising Challenge

Recently, the need for a quality and portable sound system to be used for Chamber and BACAS events along the Bucksport waterfront became apparent. The Bucksport Area Cultural Society has taken the proverbial bull by the horns and decided to hold a fundraising challenge to raise the funds BEFORE the start of this year's Bucksport Bay Festival on  Friday, July 22nd . Initial research indicates the following equipment will be needed, as well as its approximate cost.

Sound System Proposal
Soundcraft Mixer           1@ $400 = $400
JBL EON 612 Speaker    2@ $400 = $800
Speaker Stands               2@ $20 =  $40
Shure PG58                     4@ $40 = $160
Mic Cable                         1@ $30 = $30
Speaker Cable                 1@ $25 = $25
                           Estimated total: $1,455

The Chamber will store the equipment, so that it is convenient for folks who will need to use it for waterfront events. At this time, discussions are underway as to the possibilities of the equipment being available for rent.

Those wishing to help with this challenge and get the ball rolling may leave their contribution at the Chamber office Tuesday through Friday from 9 to 3, or mail to:  BACAS  PO Box 1111  Bucksport, Maine   04416
Please make checks payable to BACAS, and place "Sound System" in the memo line.

Thank you for your consideration and support. Stay tuned for more information on this challenge, as well as progress updates.

The Wilson Museum is collaborating with the Castine Historical Society and the Witherle Memorial Library to bring an exhibit of Hancock County photographs to Castine. Wrought by Hand: Furniture Making Before the Industrial Revolution

Wednesday, June 22, 2016 (2:00 - 3:30 p.m.)

Wilson Museum, Hutchins Education Center, 112 Perkins Street, Castine, ME

Have you ever thought about how furniture was made before the adoption of machinery in its' production? You can have the opportunity to find out on Wednesday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Wilson Museum's Hutchins Education Center in Castine, when Joshua Klein will lead a demonstration and discussion of the efficiency and viability of pre-industrial furniture making methods. Prior to the 19 th century, all furniture was made completely without machinery. Starting from a log all the way through to a finished piece of furniture, axes, saws, planes, and chisels were the tools employed by furniture artisans. Contrary to the myth that building by hand is slow or arduous and based on his experience, Joshua will vouch for the fact that period furniture makers were efficient workers. Joshua A. Klein is a furniture restorer/conservator who operates Klein Furniture Restoration in Brooklin, Maine. A graduate of the National Institute of Wood Finishing, Joshua specializes in structural, finish, seat weaving, and upholstery treatments. He divides his professional time between his restoration practice and studying historic American decorative arts, and researching the furniture production of Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill, ME.

For more information on this free program, contact the Wilson Museum at (207)326-9247 or [email protected].
