On-line Safety Information
As we round the corner towards the end of the school year, I am asking parents of all students to be mindful of how children are using technology. Young children are capable of accessing information, posting information and creating alias accounts on multiple sites. In an effort to ensure that our students continue to understand the idea of a 'digital footprint', we have been reviewing key digital citizenship components with our students in grades 3, 4, and 5 during Media class. The students are being reminded that most apps have 'terms of use' that require a child to be 13 to use and state that profanity and other forms of disrespect are not allowed. We have discussed the idea that deleting something does not make it go away! We have discussed the idea of building a positive reputation by thinking before posting. PLEASE HELP! Please monitor your child's use of family owned technology. Children between the ages of 4 and 11 do not have the maturity to fully understand the impact of their choices on social media nor do they fully understand that there are unkind people who are looking to take advantage of young and vulnerable children. Your children need you to parent them through the challenges that technology in general, and especially social media, are creating. Supervision is the key! If your child is visiting a friend, find out if the parent is supervising the use of technology. I do not envy your job as parents as it is very hard to monitor a child's use of phones, tablets and computers!
