To My Medicare Patients:

It has come to my attention that many of you are upset you don't have the opportunity to sit with me after you receive your mammogram.  Please let me explain.

The only insurance I take is Traditional Medicare. Because I am contracted with Medicare, I need to follow their guidelines. Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover an office visit for a screening mammogram.

At your appointment, I review your mammogram images and compare them to previous mammograms going back a few years. If there are no changes, my technologists will come and let you know that everything looks fine and you are good for another year.

If, when I am reviewing your screening mammogram images, I see something that needs additional imaging, we will proceed with any additional images and you will consult with me so you have answers immediately as you have been used to here at Breastnet.

In the past, some patients would pay for the office visit. I was informed by Medicare that I cannot take your money because I have a contract with them and everything has to be billed to them. It is considered fraud if I accept any money from my Traditional Medicare patients.

I know it is unfortunate, but I need to follow the rules. For my patients that have a history of breast cancer, you will continue to see me, since your mammogram is considered diagnostic in nature.

Please know I am still reading your mammogram and you will still receive your results that same day.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact Rebecca and she can answer any questions you may have.

Thank you,

Dr. Belinda Barclay-White
