We've made it to November, and that means it's time for pumpkin pie, cranberries and roasted chestnuts among other wonderful things at HFM
. Nature's Wild Harvest will be roasting freshly harvested chestnuts, and new to market will be
Cranberry Creek Farm bringing fresh cranberries from Bandon, OR.
We also welcome back
Stoneboat Farm, offering sustainable produce from their horse-powered farm outside Portland.
Columbia River Fish will be back with fresh wild Coho salmon, and on call vendors
Oregon Brineworks and
Sage and Sea will also be joining market this week.
Attention bakers! HFM's 7th Annual Pumpkin Pie Contest is this Saturday! If you are thinking of entering, you can
see our website for contest rules, and grab an entry form when you turn in your pie at the information booth on Saturday. Happy baking!
Congrats to our partner the
Neighborhood Gleaners, for getting some
great press in the Oregonian this past week! Every week these amazing volunteers are at the market, collecting hundreds of pounds of produce from our generous market vendors. Then they distribute it the following Monday to low-income seniors at the Hollywood Senior Center.
See you at the market!

InFARMation and Beer, next Tuesday 11/9
Scaling it Up!
|
Join
Friends of Family Farmers on Tuesday, October 13th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Holocene (1001 SE Morrison St) in Portland for InFARMation (and Beer!).
One of the most important pressure points in developing a strong, local food economy is in recruiting and supporting beginning farmers to the trade. An equally important (but often overlooked) pressure point in the food system lies in addressing the needs of our established, small-to-mid-sized farmers who are seeking to take the next step and scale up their production to access bigger or different markets.
Most producers start small, especially those folks who come to the trade as a first generation farmers. Considering the immense time, resource, and energy investment, this can be a wise approach. But as farm businesses mature, many farmers pursue bigger markets, such as restaurant, retail or institutional sales as a way of increasing their revenue and/or diversifying their income stream. This puts them in the position of trying to scale up in terms of production, distribution, processing and infrastructure. As you may imagine, in a marketplace that favors industrial production, there are many challenges that these smaller-scale producers face - not the least of which is how to maintain the ethos of their small farm operation while accessing these markets.
But alas, all is not lost! We will hear from a panel who can discuss what kind of support is out there for producers who are interested in taking the next step and scale it up!
InFARMation is FREE, open to the public and all ages! It happens every 2nd Tuesday of the month
from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison) in Portland. Doors open at 5:30; Presentation begins at 6:30.
