Market Updates
This crazy heat wave finally seems to be nearing its end, but it
sweet leaf tomatoes has left us with an abundance of ripe summer produce! Tomatoes, sweet corn, peppers, eggplant, basil, and melons will all be in abundance at market this Saturday.

Back this week after a week away are Boondockers, Fleur de Lis, Gelato Maestro, Glass Jade Nursery, Hammer & Tuffy, Portland Regular Bread, Ole World Oils, Rossi Farms, & the Village Crepery. Dragonfly Forge will also be back at market, ready to sharpen all of your knives and tools! We are excited to welcome our newest vendor, Oregon Brineworks! Brian, Connie, and their crew hand-ferment local vegetables - many of which they've grown themselves! - into delicious krauts, kimchis, and more. They also have a variety of flavors of beet kvass: a delicious, refreshing, probiotic beverage. Come on down and say hello!

This Saturday, we continue our series of kids' activities at the farmers market, with "What part of the plant am I eating?". Joanna Sooper of Turnip the Heat Cooking School will lead our "market sprouts" in this activity, where they'll get to make a salad featuring all six different parts of the plant. Activity will run between 9:30 and 11:30; make sure to stop by!

Our annual Senior Day event is coming up on Saturday, July 18th! The day will feature live music by the Rose City Banjoliers, a farmers market tour at 9:30am, and senior discounts at many of our vendors. Watch this space next week for more details about the discounts. Hollywood Senior Center and Metropolitan Family Service will have community booths on this day as well!

See you at the market!

InFARMation - Tuesday, July 14: The Feed Your Food Eats
Do you ever consider all that goes into nourishing the animals that eventually nourish ourselves? Sourcing feed options that adhere to specific requisites like non-GMO or local often proves rather challenging for livestock producers.

Nutrition and ethics are two guiding principles when selecting the right feed for livestock, but accessibility and locality are also weighted considerations for producers.

In addition to the quality of life livestock animals receive as a result of their diets, other direct results of producers' feed decisions are taste and quality of the meat itself.

Our panel will discuss livestock feed options from the producer, nutritionist, and butcher perspectives.

InFARMation takes place at the Holocene in Portland (located 1001 SE Morrison St) every second Tuesday of the month. Doors open at 5:30 pm, and presentations begin at 6:30

The panel for Tuesday, July 14:

Alice Royle - nutritionist and operator of Union Point Custom Feed in Brownsville, Oregon. Union Point gives small to mid-sized farmers, backyard farmers, and homesteaders access to custom-milled, high-quality feeds that are normally available only to those ordering many tons of feed at a time.

Aaron Silverman - co-owner and founder of Tails and Trotters, Northwest Hazelnut Finished Pork. Tails and Trotters partners with Pure Country Pork, a second-generation family farm in Ephrata, Washington. Pure Country Pork operates on a production system certified by the Food Alliance for sustainable  practices and has third-party verification for non-GMO feeds.

Tom Winterrowd - co-owner and operator of Pitkin-Winterrowd Farm in Canby, Oregon. Tom raises herbs, garlic, winter squash, and pastured pork. Recently Pitkin-Winterrowd decided to omit GMO corn and soy from their hogs' diets.

Bring your friends and join the conversation!

InFARMation is FREE, open to the public and all ages! It happens every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 5:30-8:30 pm at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison) in Portland. Doors open at 5:30; Presentation begins at 6:30.

Padron Peppers
Sun Gold Farm
Padrons are small, sweet peppers, great grilled or pan-fried with olive oil, and then sprinkled with salt. Right now, they are pretty much all mild, but once we get later in the summer, watch out! - a small minority of padrons will be hotter.

Organic Cherries
Kiyokawa Family Orchards
Several years ago, Randy Kiyokawa expanded his orchard to adjacent land, and started growing certified organic cherries and peaches! A few of the cherries showed up at market last year, but now the young trees are really producing! Kiyokawa has organic Bing and Rainier cherries for sale, as well as several other conventional varieties. They will probably be around for another couple weeks, so get them while they last!

Amaranth Greens
Blooming Goodies
Blooming Goodies is always one of our more exciting booths, because you can count on them to have interesting offerings that you wont find elsewhere in the market. Vegetables like Vietnamese spinach and purple sorrel are unique and full of flavor. This week look out for amaranth greens. They have health benefits similar to kale but cook in half the time. If you are not sure what something is or how to prepare it the vendors are happy to share ideas

Black Cod
Linda Brand Crab
Have you heard of Black Cod? It is a black fish with white meat and is caught deep in the Astoria Canyon. It contains more omegas than salmon and is described as "soft, buttery and melts in your mouth." It usually sells out by the end of the market, so if you want some, stop by early. They often have both fresh and smoked. Yum!
