Market Updates
We're excited to welcome back Kimberly Farm to market this Saturday! Bringing vegetables like peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, and fresh herbs, Kimberly Farm is all about summer's bounty. Oregon Brineworks will be starting their market season this Saturday, so don't miss your chance to pick up fresh pickles, krauts, kvass, and more! On-call vendors joining us this Saturday include House Spirits, Portland Regular Bread, and Rossi Farms. Our market is bursting at the seams and so some of your favorite vendors may have shifted their stalls slightly--if you are looking for somebody in particular, just ask at the Info Booth

Last Saturday's kids activity led by Joanna of Turnip the Heat Cooking School, was so much fun! Kids learned about the different parts of the plant (can you name all six parts? answer at the bottom of this paragraph), and were able to identify them on the pictured chalkboard. Kids were very surprised to learn that cucumber is a fruit! They also got to taste examples of all the different plant parts.  Thanks to all the many vendors who donated produce for this activity - Deep Roots Farm (fennel), Big B Farm (broccoli & carrots), Naked Acres Farm (cucumbers, green beans, celery), Sweet Leaf Farm (lettuce, beets), Winter Green Farm (tomatoes), Liepold Farms (blueberries), Sun Gold Farm (radishes), Persephone Farm (parsley) and Ken & June's Hazelnuts. And the six parts of the plant are: root, fruit, leaf, stem, flower and seed.

Our annual Senior Day event is this Saturday! The day will feature live music by the Rose City Banjoliers, a farmers market tour at 9:30am, and senior discounts at many of our vendors.  Hollywood Senior Center and Metropolitan Family Service will have community booths on Saturday as well!

Speaking of the Senior Center, did you know about the Neighborhood Gleaners, who collect unsold produce each Saturday at HFM and distribute it to low-income seniors? HFM volunteers Lianne and Rollin put together another great video profile of the Gleaners. You can view the profile here. Also read below for some more info about the Gleaners!

See you at the market!

Neighbor Gleaners
Strolling through the market, you may have noticed a group of people wandering around in black  aprons chatting with vendors. You may also have seen them enjoying some of the delightful cooked fare  at the tables. What you probably haven't seen is that group in action.

The group is called the  Neighborhood Gleaners, and they are a group of volunteers who collect unsold  food and produce from the market. All food that is collected is distributed to low income seniors in the  neighborhood through a partnership between the Hollywood Senior Center and  the Hollywood Farmers Market.

Hollywood Gleaners began in 2011, to address the increasing need for seniors to gain access to  high quality food that would otherwise be unaffordable. Through careful brainstorming between all of  the involved groups, it was decided that the program would need to address hunger for both cooking  and non-cooking seniors, to be able to handle large amounts of food with as little waste  as possible, and to be designed for ultimate sustainability. Those goals still define the  project.

Since May of 2011, Gleaners have collected tens of thousands of pounds of food for seniors. In addition to  distributing food directly to people in need, volunteers freeze or preserve food  that otherwise wouldn't make it from Saturday until Monday without spoiling. One November found volunteers  using vegetable scraps for broth and frozen vegetables and sausages for soup that was served to the  seniors for their Thanksgiving meal. A group of college volunteers created a mixed fruit jam from  one summer's frozen fruit. Waste not, want not!

The Gleaners have seen great success in their mission, but are still looking for more help. Specifically, they need volunteers for Monday morning, to help with the produce distribution at the Senior Center. They also would love some help with more programmatic aspects, like marketing and fundraising. And if you have any reusable bags that you don't need, they are always needed by the Gleaners. You can contact Heather at [email protected], and you can bring reusable bags to the HFM information booth.

Roma Tomatoes
Deep Roots Farm
Roma tomatoes are the best variety for canning and making sauce, as they are less juicy than other varieties. And, unlike most Roma tomatoes you get in the grocery stores that are picked green, Deep Roots lets them ripen on the vine so they have that excellent tomato flavor!

Pickle on a Stick
Ippai
Jane from Ippai continues to experiment with delicious Japanese comfort food each Saturday! Her newest addition is a traditional pickle of the Kyoto region, and known there as Aisukyuri. Cucumbers are pickled in ice water flavored with kombu (a type of seaweed) making a refreshing treat. This Saturday, she'll be using Suyo cucumbers from Naked Acres Farm.

Smoked Salmon
Columbia River Fish Company
This is why you live in the Pacific Northwest, right? To feast upon freshly caught, wild salmon. Take it one step further and smoke the salmon and it's a whole new flavor. CRFC hot-smokes its salmon for 6 hours, with Alder wood chips. Before that step, the salmon is brined in sea salt for one and a half hours for ultimate flavor. And of course no additives or preservatives ever make its way to the fish.

Heritage Sheep's Milk Cheese
Ancient Heritage Creamery
Heritage, a raw sheep's milk cheese, is Ancient Heritage's signature cheese. Aged for one year, it develops a rich, sweet and nutty flavor.
