Market Updates

Is there any better way to celebrate your food independence  than by taking a trip to the farmers market? We don't think so! That's why the Hollywood Farmers Market will be open its normal hours this Saturday, 8 am - 1 pm. Our vendors will have everything you need for a festive cookout, from sausages and zucchini for the grill to festive red and blue berries!

Sweet Briar, Glass Jade Nursery, Boondockers, Hammer & Tuffy, Tabor Bread, Fleur de Lis, and Gelato Maestro will be taking this week off, but are due back next Saturday. On-call vendors Portland Regular Bread, Rossi Farms, and Dancing Light Ranch  will be at market this week.   We are super excited that this Saturday will be Kiyokawa Family Orchard's  first week back at market, with certified organic cherries and peaches!

See you at the market!

Hollywood Farmers Market Board Invites You to Join!

The Hollywood Farmers Market is now accepting applications to join its Board of Directors in January 2016!

The Hollywood Farmers Market is looking for a few good souls to join our Board of Directors! If you love the market and wish to engage more intimately, then we hope you will consider this rewarding opportunity to roll up your sleeves and promote the market from within.

Participating in the both the Hollywood and Lloyd farmers markets from the vantage point of the Board of Directors offers tremendous insight and sense of involvement.

Applicants are sought who demonstrate enthusiasm for the market and a thriving food system. Backgrounds in the areas of community outreach, agriculture, communications, account/financial planning, and marketing are particularly advantageous to composing a well-rounded, effective Board.

The Board is comprised of up to fifteen members, including a handful of seats that will be vacated at the end of this year. Board members serve a three-year term and oversee the Hollywood and Lloyd Farmers Markets, which are both held year round.

The Board's primary responsibility is governance of the Markets. In addition, Board members will participate on a variety of committees where they can creatively contribute to the market's weekly activities as well as influence the organization's future.

Members attend board meetings held on the third Wednesday evening of every month as well as one or more committee meetings. Additional commitments include an annual Board retreat held every January, a vendor dinner in the spring, and a fall harvest festival celebrating our volunteers, hosted by the Board.

The deadline for applications is Sunday, September 20th . The Board will invite qualified candidates to an interview at the October 21st board meeting, and elections will take place that evening. New members will be seated effective January 1, 2016.

The application is available on our website  here.

Any questions about the recruitment process may be directed to Suzanne Briggs at  [email protected].

Fresh Lavender
Dancing Light Ranch
Fresh lavender is finally here! If you ever want to learn about different lavender varieties, Don at Dancing Light is the one to ask. Right now, they have "Royal Velvet", which has a dark, deep purple color that holds even after drying. It's great as a general culinary lavender. This is also the first week Don will have 'Grosso' (also called 'Lavandin', which is a more appetizing name). Grosso  has very strong fragrance, great for drying and crafting.

Sour Pie Cherries
Peak Forest Fruit
A special treat that only shows up for a few weeks each summer, due to its delicacy. Show up early for these; Lars at Peak Forest says this Saturday will be the last week to get them. Perfect for cherry pies, cobblers, and tarts!

'Wallamette' Sweet Onions
Sweet Leaf Farm
So named because the designation "Walla Walla onion" can only be given to sweet onions grown in the Walla Walla valley. However, Sweet Leaf Farm (outside Eugene) grows their onions as sweet and flavorful as any grown in Eastern Washington, and they're a perfect addition to any summer BBQ!

Galettes
Gluten Free Gem Bakery
Joining the Hollywood Farmers Market this spring, Gluten Free Gem Bakery offers a wide variety of gluten free baked goods, from breads to cakes to cookies!  A favorite is their galette, a freeform, crusty pastry, made with both sweet and savory fillings. The sweet galette is usually a rotating feature for farmers market fruit: right now it is strawberries from Deep Roots Farm; soon it will be cherries from ProFarm Produce!
