 Market Updates
The seasons may be changing, but things are bustling at the market! You'll find the best of both worlds: summer's peaches and plums snuggled up next to shelling beans and the first wave of winter squash. If you've been waiting all season to do some food preservation, now's the time! Many vendors are offering fruits and vegetables in bulk to make your canning and freezing adventures easy and affordable!

This week, on-call vendors Ancient Heritage, Home Grown, Lonesome Whistle Farm, New Deal Distillery, and Reverend Nat's Cider will be at market. We are also really excited to welcome our newest vendor, Seed and Thistle Apothecary. Lara Pacheco brings tinctures, teas, and other tonics handmade from plants that she's grown. Stop by and say hello to Lara!

Thanks to everyone who entered our 2014 Photo Contest, and congratulations to our winner Nicole (@nicolesy on Instagram), for this lovely plum photo! Nicole received $20 in market tokens for her grand prize. Follow us on Instagram to see more great market photos every week!

Got the back-to-school blues? Come on out to our Kids' Day celebration this Saturday! Kids' Day will feature live music from Steve Cooper (an HFM favorite), face painting with Crista, and a kids' cooking demo with Joanna Sooper from Turnip the Heat Cooking School. Joanna will be showing our market kiddos how to make a tomato-basil crostini using fresh seasonal ingredients. The demos will run from 9:30 to noon.

In honor of September being Bike Commute Challenge month, last Saturday we unveiled our new bike parking along 44th Avenue! It's now never been easier to bike to the market, and park as close as possible! Also, remember to stop by the information booth (at 44th and Hancock) and ask about our bike-to-the-market punch card. Bike to the market six times and get discounts at neighborhood bike shops!

The Hollywood Farmers Market board is still taking applications for new board members! Applications are due September 19th, see below for more details. The board's next meeting is next Wednesday the 17th, and is open to any interested members of the public. Contact Suzanne at [email protected] for more info.

Come celebrate the harvest and the vast scope of Oregon agriculture at Raise the Roots, a Friends of Family Farmers benefit, hosted by Sun Gold Farm! FoFF is a fantastic organization that provides a strong and united voice for Oregon's family farmers. The meal will be prepared by Chef Stacey Givens of Sideyard Farm & Kitchen, and tickets are still available! Find more information on FoFF's website here.

See you at the market!

Applications for HFM board due September 19th!

Do you love the Hollywood Farmers Market? Have you recently discovered the excellent weekday Lloyd Farmers Market? Are you looking for a way to get more involved in your community? Well, we have a great opportunity for you!

The Hollywood Farmers Market is now accepting applications to join its Board of Directors in January 2015! Board membership is a terrific opportunity for volunteers, vendors and market lovers to become involved with this successful nonprofit farmers market. The Board welcomes applications from individuals enthusiastic about the Market, and especially those with backgrounds in the areas of community outreach, agriculture, communications, human resources, accounting/financial planning, and marketing.

The Board is comprised of up to fifteen members, including a handful of seats which will be vacated at the end of this year. Board members serve a three year term and oversee the Hollywood and Lloyd Farmers Markets, which are both held year round. The Board's primary responsibility is governance of the Markets. In addition, Board members will participate on a variety of committees where they can creatively contribute to the market's weekly activities as well as influence the organization's future. Members attend board meetings held on the third Wednesday evening of every month and also attend one or more committee meetings. An annual Board retreat is held every January, and a vendor dinner and harvest festival are hosted by the Board throughout the year.

The deadline for applications is Saturday, September 19th. The Board will invite qualified candidates to an interview at the October 15th board meeting, and elections will take place that evening. New members will be seated effective January 1, 2015.

The application is available on our website here.
Any questions about the recruitment process may be directed to Suzanne Briggs at [email protected].

Featured Products
Golden Gate Beans
Boondockers Farm
One of the many heirloom produce varieties grown at Boondockers Farm, Golden Gate beans are a yellow Romano-type bean. Their flavor is nutty and sweet, and they have a satisfying crunch. Perfect for snacking on, or putting up a batch of dilly beans in the tail end of summer!

Zestar Apples
Kiyokawa Family Orchards
The weeks after Labor Day always seem like the perfect time of year to begin eating apples again, and a Zestar! is a great way to start. These apples are sweet and with a hint of tart and are a little more crisp and juicy than your typical early season apple. They are perfect for a mid-afternoon snack, morning oatmeal or your grandma's apple pie recipe.

Black Cod
Lionda Brand Crab
Have you heard of Black Cod? It is a black fish with white meat and is caught deep in the Astoria Canyon. It contains more omegas than salmon and is described as "soft, buttery and melts in your mouth." It usually sells out by the end of the market, so if you want some, stop by early. They often have both fresh and smoked. Yum!

Onigiri
Ippai
Always fresh, always savory! From weekend to weekend you can count on Chef Jane to offer a variation of her Onigiri. Traditionally Japanese rice balls rolled in nori and filled with fun and delicious ingredients. Onigiri makes for a perfect hand held snack while exploring the market.
