 Market Updates

Today may be windy and wet, but the forecast for Saturday looks clear, dry, and warmer--perfect conditions for a late November market day! We're excited to welcome some vendors back to the market this Saturday: Columbia River Fish will be back with delicious, fresh and smoked salmon, after several weeks away. Eagle Organic Cranberries will also be returning to market this Saturday, after several years away! This is likely their only date at HFM this season, so don't miss out on your chance to stock up on local, organic cranberries!

We'll also be joined by on-call vendors Ancient Heritage, House Spirits, Lonesome Whistle, & New Deal Distillery. Fleur de lis Bakery and Linda Brand Crab are taking the week off, but will be back next Saturday!

This Saturday is the Rose City Park Presbyterian Church's annual Antique Artisan Faire! The faire will run from 9am to 4pm, at the church directly to the north of the market site, and will feature antiques, collectibles and artisan-made goods.

This past Sunday night, a fire burned the main barn to the ground at Deck Family Farm.  Luckily the human population at the farm remained unharmed, but they lost a bull, two calves, a tractor, manure spreader and other equipment, and tens of thousands of dollars worth of alfalfa hay. Read more about the fire here and consider helping this wonderful farm with the rebuilding process.

We're happy to announce that our Fresh Funds matching program is once again a featured charity in the Willamette Week GiveGuide, partnering with eight other farmers markets and the Farmers Market Fund! This program matches money spent by SNAP (formerly food stamps) customers to increase their purchasing power at the market. See below for more info on this profoundly important program. Also, if you're reading this on Thursday, November 13th, today is a special Give Day! Anyone donating more than $10 today will be entered to win a ticket package for the Trail Blazers!

See you at the market!

Support Farmers Market Fund in the Willamette Week GiveGuide!
The Hollywood Farmers Market's matching program, Fresh Funds, began in 2010 with a simple idea - that all Oregon residents deserve access to fresh, local produce from their neighborhood farmers market. With this in mind, we created a program that would increase the spending power of customers receiving SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps).

Every market day, SNAP customers can use their EBT card and withdraw SNAP dollars to be used at the farmers market. The Hollywood Farmers Market provides an additional $5 in matching funds, increasing the customer's spending power at the market and encouraging healthy eating. For many families, this extra $5 a week is what makes it possible for them to shop at the farmers market, rather than at a grocery store. Since 2010, this program has matched over $46,000 to thousands of SNAP customers at the Hollywood Farmers Market, and many other farmers markets have started similar programs.

This year, our matching program is a featured charity in the Willamette Week GiveGuide! This is part of a cooperative effort between nine farmers markets throughout the Portland metro area, called the Farmers Market Fund. Funds raised in the Give!Guide will be shared among SNAP matching programs at all the participating farmers markets, another step toward making these programs institutional and permanent.

Why support the Farmers Market Fund? (Quotes from SNAP match recipients)

"I have a chronic health condition, so fresh veggies and fruits help to give me a better quality of life. The only way I can afford fresh is through this program."

"This program is actually helping my kids grow! They have eaten more fruit this summer than ever before."

"I feel much more connected to the community and to the food I eat when I buy fresh and local from the farmers market. Thank you!"

Processed food does not have to be the only option for families on food stamps. Please consider supporting the Farmers Market Fund to ensure all Oregonians have access to healthy, fresh, local produce!

Featured Products
November 15, 2014

Romanesco
Winter Green Farm
Really, this picture just about says it all: romanesco has a truly striking, fractal appearance. Its flavor is delicate and similar to cauliflower, to which it's closely related.

Pineapple Quince
Sun Gold Farm
The quince is not a fruit that should be eaten fresh off the tree like an apple or a pear. Raw, it has a dry, almost cottony flesh, combined with a tart, sometimes astringent flavor. However, when cooked, a quince yields a wonderful floral smell and delightfully mellow flavor. It is excellent for canning and great in jams and marmalades. It is the original pectin!

Oatmeal Almond Soap
La Fountain Herbal
A delicious bar of soap reminiscent of a fresh baked cookie! Oatmeal is added to help sooth and nourish any inflammation on the body.

Enterprise Apple
Mt. Hood Organic Farm
This apple is a deep, luscious red, like something out of the Brothers Grimm. Its flavor is mildly tart with a crisp texture that makes me think it would store well.
