Market Updates
This Saturday's market is all about fruit! It's likely the final week for cherries from Kiyokawa Family Orchards , but they will also have the summer's earliest apples. Many of our vendors including U nger Farms, Liepold Farms, Happy Harvest, & Deep Roots  will continue to have raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries, and maybe even a few strawberries! Maryhill Orchards  and ProFarm Produce  will have stone fruit including peaches, plums, and nectarines. T here will also be lots of watermelons and cantaloupes: perfect refreshment on a hot summer's day!

On-call vendors this Saturday include Seed & Thistle Apothecary, House Spirits, Portland Regular Bread, & Rossi Farms.

For those of you who missed Chef Anh Luu's cooking demo this past Saturday, you can check out her recipe in this issue of the Local Dirt (on the right sidebar) for Stir-Fried Glass Noodles with Farmers Market Veggies! Thanks to all the vendors that contributed produce to this delicious dish - Sweet Leaf Farm (broccoli), Gales Meadow Farm (tromboncini squash), Blooming Goodies (basil) and Deep Roots Farm (tomatoes).

It's August (in a couple days), and that means it's time for HFM's annual photo contest!!! See below for instructions on how to enter your beautiful photos into the contest. First prize is $20
in farmers market tokens!

Ima Blueberry
This Saturday Ima Blueberry will be making her annual appearance! We don't know what time she'll be here, but if you see a woman walking around in a blueberry costume with matching makeup and accessories, that's her!

The Hollywood Lions would like to thank the many market shoppers who brought used eyeglasses and hearing aids to the market last Saturday! They were able to collect 33 pairs of glasses and 1 hearing aid. This means that 33 people will have vision because of you; one person will have hearing as well. If you have used eyeglasses or hearing aids and would like to donate them to the Lions, please feel free to drop them off at Rose City Vision on Sandy, Umpqua Bank on Sandy, 42nd Street Station or Grocery Outlet.

Next Tuesday, August 4th is National Night Out! In Hollywood, the party will be outside the Hollywood East building (one block south of HFM, at the corner of 45th and Broadway) from 4pm to 7pm. HFM will have a table there, and we'll be running our popular "What Part of the Plant am I Eating" activity.  Bring the family and meet the neighbors!

See you at the market!

Cooking Demo Recipe
Stir Fried Glass Noodles with Farmers Market Veggies
From Chef Anh Luu, Tapalaya

Yields 4 servings
Ingredients:
4-bundles of dry bean thread noodles
¼-Cup garlic, minced
¼-Cup black bean paste
1-tablespoon sambal chili paste
1 lime, juiced
2-tablespoon fish sauce (can be omitted for vegan/vegetarian diets)
1-cup H2O
½-teaspoon black pepper
2-quarts veggies - whatever is available at your local farmers market!
*I like to use a combo of leafy greens (kale, spinach, or chard), squash, mushrooms, or root veggies. Anything goes!

1. Prep your vegetables. Clean, slice, and dice to the size of your liking!
2. Soak your bean thread noodles in luke warm water for 10-15 minutes prior to cooking. The noodles will not cook properly if they are not rehydrated!
3. Heat a large sauté pan with cooking oil.
4. Sauté raw veggies for 5 minutes
5. Add garlic, black bean paste, sambal chili paste, fish sauce and H2O.
6. Stir and simmer together for 10-15 minutes
7. Add your rehydrated glass noodles and toss together. (The noodles will cook instantly!)
8. If mixture looks dry just add more water!
9. Finish with squeeze of lime and black pepper
10. Top with fresh herbs if desired! (cilantro, basil, mint, sorrel, etc)
