| Free Mumps Vaccine Offered to Students Going to U of I in Urbana-Champaign |
|
Due to a mumps outbreak at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is encouraging students who attend that university to receive a booster shot of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine as soon as possible, even if they have already received one or two previous MMR vaccinations.
The Health Department's Immunizations program is offering free MMR vaccine to students registered at the UIUC. State-provided vaccine was made available due to the outbreak. Please call (847) 377-8470 for an appointment at the clinic, located at 2303 Dodge Avenue in Waukegan.
Evidence indicates that a third dose of MMR can be helpful in controlling mumps outbreaks in this setting. The McKinley Health Center at UIUC, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District and the Illinois Department of Public Health are recommending a third dose of MMR vaccine for UIUC students. This is especially important for those planning on living in congregate settings such as dormitories or fraternity or sorority houses.
The MMR vaccine may take up to two weeks to provide protection against mumps; therefore, if possible, this extra dose of MMR vaccine should be obtained prior to returning to campus. Classes start the third week of August.
In addition to the booster shot, it is important to practice good health habits to reduce the spread of disease, including washing your hands frequently with soap and water, not sharing eating utensils, drinking cups, or cigarettes, cleaning frequently touched surfaces, and minimizing close contact with people when sick.

|  This is the last reminder I will send about appealing your assessments. If you feel your property is incorrectly assessed, you should contact the assessors office with comparable information. The assessor's office sets the value of your property and the taxing bodies set the tax rates. Please note that this is the only time you can appeal your assessment. Many people call the assessor's office when the tax bill comes. That is too late. You must appeal the value of your home by August 17, 2015. |
Adaptive Traffic Control Signals on Gilmer

What are all those cameras on Gilmer Road?
LCDOT is modernizing traffic signals to move vehicles through more quickly and efficiently. They are using Adaptive Traffic Signal Control technology which learns the daily traffic patterns and is able to adapt by changing signal timings and phases. The signals will also be able to adapt to unexpected vehicle patterns.

The contract for the surface coating of the three pickleball courts and nets was approved at our August board meeting. I will let you know when the courts are open and ready for play.

Hawthorn Woods Hosts Route 53 Meeting

Please join Mayor Joseph Mancino and the Village Board of Trustees for a presentation and update about the proposed Route 53 expansion through the Hawthorn Woods community. This town hall meeting will take place on Monday, August 17th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran School & Church (24500 N. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods). They will provide a brief history of the proposed road and discuss the road alignment, financing, land use, and environmental factors.

| Recycle Sheets, Blankets, Towels, for the Dogs |

If you have used towels, sheets or blankets that need to be recycled, please consider bringing them to Fremont Township at 22385 Rt 60, Mundelein to be donated to local Animal Shelters and Rescues. Please drop them in the bin on the front porch. This keeps them out of the landfill and puts them to good use.
We also accept eye glasses and shoes to be recycled year round. If you are disposing of shoes that have laces, please tie the laces together.

Two Low Cost Pet Vaccination Clinics in August
|
The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center's Animal Care and Control Program is offering two low-cost pet vaccination clinics in August. Each clinic provides a convenient and affordable way for Lake County residents to keep their pets up to date with shots and rabies tags.
From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 15, Lake County pet owners may bring their pets to the Zion Park District at the corner of Bethel Boulevard and 27th Street for the Zion Vaccination Clinic.
From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 22, Lake County pet owners may bring their pets to the Fox Lake Police Department at 301 S. Route 59 for the Fox Lake Vaccination Clinic.
Standard vaccine, tag and microchip costs for the vaccination clinics are as follows:
For Pets Spayed/Neutered
One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag: $20.00
One-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper: $25.00
Distemper complex only: $10.00
Microchip: $15.00
For Pets Not Spayed/Neutered
One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag: $60.00
One-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper: $65.00
Distemper complex only: $10.00
Microchip: $15.00
Pets will be taken on a first come first served basis. All animals brought to the clinic must be at least four months old. Dogs must be leashed and cats placed in carriers. Only cash will be accepted on site. Proof of spay/neuter may be required.
The Health Department's Animal Care and Control Program tracks pet vaccinations and rabies tags, investigates animal bites and complaints of nuisance and neglect, as well as impounds stray animals. Animal wardens are also available to provide free programs to small community groups about animal behavior and wildlife interaction. The Animal Care and Control facility is located at 18736 West Peterson Road, Libertyville.

The Mundelein Farmers Market is open through October 9th, Fridays from 3 to 7 pm. It is located on the north half of the Santa Maria Church parking lot on Highway 45, between Crystal and Courtland. Vendors and residents who frequent the market are very pleased with the quality of the offerings and the participation. This year, the Farmers Market is located in the Santa Maria Del Popolo Parking Lot on Route 45. The new location is giving the market great exposure. In fact, several vendors have sold everything they brought! Each week, more and more people are discovering this community gem! Please make plans to stop by!
