The Foundation's new scholarship recipients met together in Ferguson Auditorium on June 13 for their Scholarship Orientation -- what a great group! They are bright, enthusiastic and grateful; they will go far, we're sure. I am excited to announce that the Foundation will have a 4.4% increase in the number of awards and an 11.1% increase in the amount of dollars awarded for 2016-17 scholarship period. This is due to the hard work of the A-B Tech President, the Foundation's Board of Directors and the Office of College Advancement Staff, along with the generosity of community members, our own employees, retirees and alumni, as well as area businesses. Recipients are not only financially supported by scholarships, but they are also encouraged by a scholarship award. The staff members of College Advancement and Financial Aid have seen that support and encouragement translate into success and graduation. Over the many years I have been with A-B Tech, I can confidently say that education and training is what this college is all about. Education continues to be one of the most reliable predictors of economic and social well-being, so please continue your support of the Foundation's scholarships. Thank you all very much! And a special "shout out" to Laura D. Pennington, A-B Tech's Resource Development Director, as she accepts a new position at Virginia Highlands Community College. We thank her for her work in securing much-needed grant dollars for the College and we wish her the best!

A-B Tech Receives Grant from Powers Fund for Lavender Funding
|
A-B Tech Community College received a $29,429 grant from the Helen A. Powers Fund over the next two years to support Lavender Fund students attending classes during the summer semester.
The Lavender Fund was established at A-B Tech in 2008 and is a highly successful, year-long scholarship and support program for single parents. The Lavender Fund has a retention/completion rate of almost 90 percent compared to the average national community college retention/completion rate of 56 percent.

The gift from the Helen A. Powers Fund will further support students to ensure completion by allowing them to take summer classes, which are often not funded by traditional financial aid. Being able to take classes year-round, the learning process is not disrupted and students are able to finish their education sooner. "My program requires me to take a full load this summer, so any extra money is greatly appreciated," said Stephanie Arrowood, a Surgical Technology student. Funds will also support the Lavender Advisor position.
Powers, a Madison County native who made her home in Asheville, was a philanthropist who had a calling to assist other women. Serving on the board of directors of Mission Hospitals and the Mission Foundation, she devoted much time and effort seeking to improve the health services for needy women and was instrumental in establishing an advanced maternity and pediatrics unit at Mission Hospital where the women's center is named in her honor. She went on to raise funds for a mobile mammography van to reach women in rural Western N.C.
"Receiving funding for summer classes is a huge help," said Ryan Smith, a Computer Technologies Information student. "I can breathe."
Powers, who passed away in 2013, was appointed the first woman Secretary of Revenue by Gov. James G. Martin in 1985 after 25 years in the banking industry where she retired as senior vice president of North Carolina National Bank. Returning to Asheville following her time as Secretary of Revenue, Helen helped to reshape the financial services industry in the Carolinas. She was active in numerous groups and played a pivotal role on various business, civic and charitable boards.

Bridging the Gap - Volunteerism at A-B Tech
|
Over the past decade, state institutions such as A-B Tech have had to shrink their operating budgets. Needing to find new and innovative ways of accomplishing its missions in this era of tighter budgets, the College reached out to the local community to see what resources were available to bridge the budget gaps. The resulting outreach saw the creation of the A-B Tech Volunteer Program, one of just a few volunteer programs at a community college in the country.
Today, Volunteers at A-B Tech are providing a variety of support to faculty and staff such as administrative support, assistance with special events, and tutoring (for both curriculum and transitional studies students). The program even matches highly-skilled "Executive Volunteers" with faculty and staff to share their career expertise in supporting program development. In addition, value-added programs have been made possible through the support of Volunteers; these include the Veterans' Café, Dog Therapy, and Mentoring Programs.

Staff and faculty have been grateful for the support, new perspectives, and experience that our A-B Tech Volunteers bring to the College. Pam Silvers, Instructor of Computer Technologies and Principal Investigator to the NSF-ATE Grant, utilizes Volunteers in numerous ways to ensure the success of her programming. "The Volunteers have been invaluable to the success of our programs. When I was Department Chair, Volunteers helped proof documents, organize files and folders, and perform many other tasks. Recently, Volunteer Nadia Arbelo, one of the Volunteer Programs' "Executive Volunteers", chaired two focus groups for our A-B Tech Women in Technology group, which allowed us to provide focus for the upcoming year," said Silvers.
Looking to the future, the Volunteer Program will continue to support student success and provide assistance to staff and faculty in strengthening programing and stretching limited funding. The Volunteer Program is proud to provide innovative solutions to make it possible for A-B Tech to bridge gaps, accomplish its mission, and look confidently to the future. The College's Volunteer Program is supported by the fund-raising efforts of the Board of Directors of the A-B Tech Foundation; please consider a charitable contribution to this important initiative.

Laura Pennington will be leaving A-B Tech at the end of June after nearly four years with the College. She has served as the College Advancement Department's Resource Development Director, focusing on helping the College and Foundation acquire grants, contracts and special funds. During her tenure, more than $13 million has been successfully awarded to support the work of the College. Laura and her family will be moving to Abingdon, Virginia where she will join the Institutional Advancement staff at Virginia Highlands Community College. When asked about what projects she is most proud of at A-B Tech, Laura shared that she "really enjoyed projects like the Craft Beverage Institute, workforce development, the Lavender Fund, Basic Skills, and the National Science Foundation." Laura says that she "will miss A-B Tech and will keep tabs on the College from afar...many great things lie ahead and I am grateful for getting to play a small part in building for the future."
